My subconscious chastises me and then turns on itself in the same moment.

You know you want to touch those abs. Lick them. Bite them. What are you waiting for?

Closing my eyes, I suck in a deep breath and let it out slowly in an attempt to calm my racing heart. When I reopen them, I find Eli walking around, taking in every detail of the space, while my feet remain planted near the couch. From the artwork hanging on the walls to the fruit bowl on the kitchen island, he examines everything, running his fingers across the granite countertop when he passes, before shoving his hands in his front pockets as he comes to a stop near my bookshelf on the far wall. The way he inspects the photos I have displayed feels invasive.

They’re all of Austin, Hayden, and me. There are moments captured that give away our personalities. Christmases together. Halloween parties. My last birthday when they forced me to step out of my comfort zone and go to a ritzy club in downtown LA. The three of us in Vegas celebrating. And my personal favorite, sharing a bath at the age of two. All three of us covered in bubbles from our necks down, smiling at the camera.

Maria took the picture.

She has the same one framed on the table next to her bed.

“Sisters?” he asks after what feels like an eternity of silence, the air in the room having grown heavier and heavier. When I don’t answer right away, he glances over his shoulder at me, his blue eyes finding mine as he raises his right eyebrow.

The three of us couldn’t look more different if we tried. Tall, blonde Austin with her striking green eyes and large breasts. Hayden, short and brunette, her violet eyes standing out in every picture we take. And then there’s me … average height with long, wavy, light brown hair and dark brown eyes. I want to laugh at his question, but I can barely bring myself to speak let alone laugh.

“Yeah,” is all I say as I force myself to take a seat on the couch.

When Eli plops down next to me, his thigh brushing mine, a shiver runs up my spine and it takes all the strength I have not to let out the moan I swallow down or run away from the way his simple touch affected me.

Because it did.

His proximity mixed with the spicy scent of his cologne has my head spinning. Judging by the smirk on his face, he knows it. He’s enjoying the effect he’s having on me. And when he leans in close, tucking a stray strand of hair behind my ear, those blue eyes pierce me in place, stealing my breath.

This was a bad idea.

Being alone with him.

I’m waiting for my subconscious to agree with me, but she remains silent. I guess I’m not the only one wavering right now.
