“Really?” they ask in unison.

“Yup. Because I can control the narrative. If I can keep the focus on our relationship, I’m hoping they won’t bring up anything I’m not ready to talk about.”

They’re both silent for a long moment before Austin speaks.

“I think that’s brave, Tay. For the record, I don’t think it’ll work, but it’s brave nonetheless.”

“I concur. And when you freak out and lose your shit, call us. We’re here for you,” Hayden adds.

“Wow. You guys are really killing the good feeling I had about this.”

“I’m just trying to be realistic,” Austin explains. “Think about it this way. Celia fed them just enough to get them interested in you. There are two, not one but two, magazines with your picture on the front cover right now. Tomorrow there may be more. People are being paid right now to dig into your life. To find out who you are and everything there is to know about you. You can’t give an exclusive to every magazine. You can’t control what they print. They’re going to find out who your mom is. Just prepare yourself. This isn’t going to go away. Not any time soon.”

I’m stunned into silence. I was planning on telling them who my mother was. I knew it would bring up my father’s death but there’s not much I can really say about it. I was kept in the dark for twenty-five years.

That doesn’t mean they won’t ask.

“You know what,” I start as I pull into my driveway, parking in front of the garage but not pulling my car inside, “change of plans. Full disclosure. A tell-all exclusive to the highest bidder.”

“Taylor,” I hear Hayden warn.

“That’s a really bad idea,” Austin adds.

“Actually, I think it’s the best idea I’ve ever had. Because in the end, there are no more secrets. And once all the secrets are out, there’s nothing left to talk about.”
