Tossing my cards in the center of the table, folding on my shit hand (who wins with a two and a seven?), I’m about to forgive him when Brady of all people chimes in.

“What’s her name? Because if she’s giving you this much of a run for your money, I want to shake her hand.”

Laughter ensues as if the last twenty-four hours didn’t happen. Everyone starts ribbing on Max, but he doesn’t give them what they want. A name. It’s something I have to admit I’m curious about as well. I’ve seen Max go through women before and not a single one of them has managed to tie him down.

But whoever this girl is, I feel like she has the ability to do just that.

“Thanks man,” Max says as we’re all cleaning up for the night.

“Anytime. I enjoy putting you in your place,” I joke, nudging him with my shoulder. “But I think you owe me now.”

“That’s fair.”

“Good, because there’s something I want.” Standing to my full height so I’m only a few inches shorter than him, I watch as he quirks an eyebrow at me but doesn’t respond. “A name, Max. I want to know who this girl is.”

“Hell no.”

“Are you ashamed of her?”

“No, but I also don’t have her permission. Plus, it’s over.”

But I can hear it in his voice. It’s far from over. He’s not over her. Which means Max is going to have to fight for her. Something I’m not sure he knows how to do.

“If you say so, but the day it’s back on, and you and I both know that day will come, I expect to know before anyone else. And I want to meet her when it happens. She really does deserve a solid handshake for twisting you up like this.”

“Fuck off,” he jokes, pushing against my chest, causing me to stumble a little.

All I do is laugh as our friends stare at us in wonder. I kept my voice low enough that no one would hear what we were talking about. Out of respect for Max and whoever his mystery woman is. Also, because I didn’t want to make Finn jealous that I was going to find out who she was first.

Unless he catches them in the act like I did.

Well, more in the act than I did. Phone sex is something you can hide behind closed doors—and God, I wish he had closed his door because I can’t unhear what I heard that night—but sneaking someone in and out of an apartment you share with your best friend is harder than is seems.

Hell, the first time I brought Lex over Kendall and Dec caught us red-handed. Or we caught them depending on how you look at it. At least we had our clothes on.

Max will get his. In due time. And I can’t wait to watch him fall. It’s going to be glorious.
