“You know,” I start, rolling her onto her back and hovering over her, grateful she didn’t put clothes back on. Lex still tries to hide her body sometimes. Old habits die hard. “My mom seemed to love you—”

“Your mom loved our shirts.”

“I mean, they were pretty great. But it wasn’t the shirt she was talking about when she pulled me in for a hug before we left. Though she did mention something about them being accurate.”

My shirt saidMy Better Halfwith an arrow pointing toward Lex. Yes, I kept her tucked into that side of me all day. Her shirt saidHis Better Half.

“She did?” The surprise in Lex’s voice makes me sad. She’s amazing. Everyone around her sees it. I just wish she did. Her confidence has improved but she still has a long way to go before she sees herself the way I do.

She’s the sun, the moon, and the stars. Without her there would be no light in my life.

“She did. She also said you were perfect for me. That she was happy for us. And that if I screwed it up, she was going to take your side.”

Her smile breaks free first. She tries to contain it by pressing her lips together, but it doesn’t last more than a second. The deep rumble of laughter follows. By the time her body is shaking, her laughter echoing through the room, I’m chuckling along with her. Her spirit is infectious.

“My mom loved you, Lex. So did my dad. But neither of them love you as much as I do.”

A laugh catches in her throat, causing her to cough, her smile fading as she stares up at me in shock.

“You heard me right,” I say before she has a chance to respond. “I love you, Lex. I’m pretty sure I have since the moment you crawled in the back of Dec’s truck that first day. You challenge me every day. To be a better person. To put in the effort. To stay when things get hard. I live to see you smile. It’s hard to breathe when you’re around sometimes. It’sreallyhard not to touch you all the time.

“I can’t tell you the moment I realized it because I think I’ve always known; I just wasn’t ready to admit it to myself. Probably because that meant Declan was right. He said when I met the right woman, she’d knock me on my ass and make me want to change my ways. You’ve done both. I didn’t even realize it was happening at the time, but looking back, I don’t regret it at all. I’m so happy I found you, or you found me. I’m thankful I was able to break down your walls. That you trust me enough to let me in. And that despite your apprehension at first, you gave me a chance.”

“You didn’t give me a choice,” she interrupts. “And I believe I get credit for this. I was the one who threw myself at you.”

“Yes, but I was the one that pursued you.”

“I think the word you’re looking for is stalked.”

“My persistence paid off.” Wiggling my eyebrows at her, I lean in close, kissing the corner of her lips. I’m already hard as stone from the mention of that first night. Walking in and finding her laid out on top of her sleeping bag, naked. Just for me. “Plus, you didn’t exactly push me away.”

“I tried,” she purrs, shifting beneath me.

“You chased after me,” I point out.

“I was horny,” she explains, pressing her lips against mine as she thrusts her hips upward.

The lust in her voice causes my dick to twitch. As much as I’m enjoying our banter, my body has other ideas. Ones that don’t include talking.

“And right now?” I ask, sliding my hand up the inside of her thigh. Slowly inching closer to her junction. “Are you horny right now?”

“Why don’t you find out?” she urges, shimmying beneath me in a vain attempt to have my hand closer to where she wants it.

It’s not my hand that is going to get her off tonight, though. She growls when I remove it, but it morphs into a moan as I line myself up and easily slide between her folds.

“I love you, Lex.” My words are strained as I seat myself as deep as I can go.

“I love you, too, Micah.”

My heart threatens to jump out of my chest at her confession. I knew she loved me. I’ve known for a while. But to hear her say it out loud... it overwhelms me.

“We’re gonna be late,”Lex hollers from the kitchen. “I swear to God, Micah. I will kill you if I’m late to my first class of the semester.

Worth it, I think to myself.

I’m a proud man. And I made a fool of myself last night. Ten seconds after Lex said she loved me, I shot my load.

She didn’t seem disappointed, but I was. My performance was lackluster. Not that I didn’t take the time to get Lex off, but it wasn’t because of my dick. Another first for me. One I don’t plan to repeat.
