"I call bullshit."

"Mom! Seriously?"

"Addison Marie Larken, you are a horrible liar. You know that man would drop everything he has going on to come and help you. There's a reason you didn't call him. What's going on?"

Ugh! I really don't want to do this right now.

"We're not talking right now. Happy?"

"Of course not. Why are you fighting?"

"I didn't say we were fighting. To fight you have to speak to one another."

"So what happened in paradise? Last time I checked, you two were madly in love and one step away from eloping."

Not true. We've never been that happy together. Sure, we're in love, but there's never been talk of marriage before the other day. Maybe that's why I was caught off guard.

"Not exactly, Mom."

"That's not the story he tells."

"When did you talk to Liam?"

"I don't know, maybe two weeks ago. He called, we had a nice little chat. Is something wrong with that?"

They had a chat? That doesn't sound like Liam. If he called my mom, there was a reason. He's not the kind of man that chats. He hates talking on the phone. Prefers to text.

That only leaves one reason he called her.

"If I ask you something, will you tell me the truth?"

"We don't keep secrets from each other anymore, Addison."

She has a point. I made her a promise to always be honest with her when I moved out. I've tried to keep that promise. Let's see if she keeps her end of the bargain.

"Did Liam call and ask your permission to marry me?"

She’s quiet for a moment before finally saying "Why? Did he propose?"

Yep. That's why he called. And I'm the asshole that turned him down because I thought he was only asking me to marry him because I was pregnant.

Nope. He'd been planning to ask for weeks. I wonder how long ago he bought my ring.

"A few days ago."

"So why is your ring finger empty?"

"Because I said no."

My mother doesn't comment, but her swift intake of breath at my shocking news doesn't get past me. She's a fan of Liam. My father was a fan of Liam. I'm sure she gave him her blessing.

Adam,on one knee in front of me, reminds me of what I use to refer to as the worst mistake of my life. I can't say that anymore because if I had said yes to Liam, I wouldn't be here right now.

I never would have met Adam. Or Chloe.

Plus, with everything that transpired after that night, we never would have stayed together. Hell, we probably wouldn't even have made it down the aisle.

Still, if Adam is about to propose to me because I'm pregnant, I'm not sure I can give him a different answer than I gave Liam. There's only one way to be sure I don't make the same mistake twice.
