"No, that's another story. Liam had nothing to do with it."

"Well—" my mother starts as the tow truck driver approaches, handing me my keys.

"You're all set, miss. You ladies have a good night."

"Thank you," I say as I wrap my hand around my keys tight enough that they dig into my skin.

"Why don't we grab a bite to eat," my mother suggests, nodding in the direction of the diner.

Grabbing my purse from the front seat, I meet my mother inside. She's seated at a booth in the back and there are already two glasses of water on the table in front of her.

The waitress walks over as I take a seat, taking my mother's order as I browse the menu. It's two pages, but nothing sounds good to me, so I have the same thing my mother ordered.

"Since when do you like pancakes?"

"I don't."

"You just ordered them."

Well, shit. I won't be eating those. I hate pancakes. Always have since I was a little kid. My mother, on the other hand, could eat them for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I prefer waffles or french toast if I'm eating breakfast.

"So, tell me what happened to your face," she begins, leaning close so our conversation is kept private.

"I was attached while I was running last week. They stole your wedding ring. I didn't want to tell you."

"Honey, you know that I care more about you than that ring, right?"

"I do, but it was from Dad. It can't be replaced."

Letting out a sigh, my mother takes my hands in hers and gives them a light squeeze. "Baby girl, your dad wouldn't have wanted you to get hurt over that ring. You know that. It still doesn't explain why there's not another ring on your finger, though."

Time to break her heart. I hope she's okay with being called grandma.

"Liam proposed, and I said no. I thought he was only asking because we found out I'm pregnant."

My mother's eyes go wide in shock. She opens her mouth to speak, but no words come out. The waitress interrupts our moment, giving my mother a minute to let the news sink in.

"My baby is going to have a baby?" she finally asks.

"It appears that way. I'm actually not supposed to be out of bed. Doctor's orders."

That doesn't sit well with her.

My mother begins frantically waving her hands over her head to get the waitress’s attention. Our food is quickly boxed up while my mother settles the bill. She's ushering me out the door and helping me in my car five minutes later and then insists on following me home to make sure I get there okay.

Liam's waiting on the front porch when we pull in the driveway.

"I brought you someone," my mother teases as she helps me up the walkway.

"That's funny. I thought she wasn't supposed to get out of bed, let alone leave the house."

They continue to have a conversation about me as if I'm not standing next to them. It's irritating, so I leave them on the porch and head inside to use the bathroom.

My bladder is about to burst, and it feels like I've already leaked into my panties a little. Taking a seat on the toilet, I notice a dark-brown stain in my underwear, and when I look between my legs into the toilet, there's even more.

A shooting pain in my back startles me, causing me to cry out for help. My mother and Liam both rush into the bathroom, but there's nothing they can do for me.

The doctor said this was a possibility. He said my body might not be strong enough. Apparently, he was right.
