"Maybe you should talk to him, then," she mumbles.

And that was my breaking point.

"You know what, Mom? If you like Liam so much, why don't you marry him? Will that make you happy? He's the son you always wanted, right? Here," I yell, sliding my phone across the table crashing into her plate. "Call him. I'm sure he'd love to talk to you. You can tell him how miserable I am to live with and that he's better off without me. It's the truth, right? Because without his child growing inside me, I'm worthless. Why would he want to marry someone who was weak? He wouldn't, so I left. Is that what you want to hear?"

Standing quickly, my chair clatters to the floor as I storm out of the room.

"Addison, wait!" my mother calls after me, but I don't stop until I'm up the stairs and slamming my door behind me.

Pacing the room, I contemplate my options. I can't stay here any longer than necessary. I need to find a job before I graduate. It needs to be somewhere far away from here. She'll never stop pestering me about Liam. She won't let it go. I understand she thinks I'm making a mistake, but this is my life.

I need to start taking control of it.

Taking a seat at my desk, I open my laptop and log onto the career site. I will find a job today. It may take hours. I may fill out dozens of applications. Something will be the perfect fit. It has to be, or I'll go insane in this house before I have a chance to get out.

A soft knock on the door breaks my concentration. Looking at the time, she's given me almost two hours to calm down. I'm shocked. Normally she only lasts twenty minutes, tops, before she's beating on my door demanding to talk about whatever happened.

"Come in," I call, knowing she won't go away until we settle this.

When the door opens, I'm surprised to see Liam standing in the hallway, my mother at his side.

"No," I say as he steps forward. "I'm not doing this. Whatever she told you, erase it from your memory. This is over. I'll always love you, Liam, but I can't do it anymore."

"Addy—"

"No," I say again, cutting him off before he can protest. "And you," I say turning to my mother. "This is not your battle to fight. Give it up now or you will lose me. This is my life. I'm sorry you don't agree with my decision, but it was mine to make, and it's what I want."

"Don't you at least want to hear him out?" my mother whines.

Shaking my head, I stand and walk to the door, closing it as I say, "I'm sorry."

What I didn't knowat the time, and didn't find out until years later, was that Liam had found my ring. The one that was stolen from me when I was attacked. My mother's wedding ring.

She kept it a secret. It wasn't until I caught her wearing it in a video chat that she confessed everything. She promised to hold onto it for me, but I was so angry I told her I didn't want it.

The sentimental value was tainted.
