"Job offer. A good one. They sought me out, not the other way around. I knew you were there, and your mom tried to get me to contact you a few times, but I refused. I wasn't ready, and if I wasn't, I knew you weren't. I did see you once, though. Right before you moved. You were having coffee with a woman."

My mind is reeling.

All those years, he was so close to me. I had no idea, but my mother did, and she never mentioned it. She could have tried to force us back together then. It would have made sense.

Not now.

Not once I've moved on and started a new life for myself.

That's her being selfish.

As if she knew we were talking about her, my mother waltzes into the room. There's a huge grin on her face as she greets us, taking her time pouring herself a cup of black coffee.

"Mom," I call before she leaves the kitchen. "Liam was nice enough to offer to take you to the airport on his way home today. I'll be up to help you pack your bags in a few minutes."

Keeping my voice firm so she doesn't misinterpret my words, my mother keeps her back to me as she heads up the stairs to the guest bedroom.

"Thank you for taking her with you. I'm sorry she pulled you into this."

"My pleasure. I have a feeling she's not going to enjoy the ride as much as she thinks she is. I have a few things I'd like to discuss with her while she's trapped in the car."

"Well, after what I'm about to say, your words will barely hurt," I remark through clenched teeth.

Turning to follow my mother, I stop at the bottom of the stairs and whisper, "Goodbye, Liam."

I swear I hear him echo my words, but I don't turn around to see if he's close enough to have heard me. It doesn't matter either way. We said our goodbyes years ago. If it wasn't for my meddling mother, we wouldn't have to relive that pain all over again.

After the conversation I'm about to have with her, I guarantee it won't happen for a third time.
