Chloe clears her throat, offers me a piece of pizza, and then gags when neither of us moves an inch. Why would I want to? I'm staring into the most beautiful green eyes, feeling the heat between us build.

"Okay, get out. Both of you. Go fuck each other's brains out. Come back when you can be better company."

My laugh gets caught in my throat, and I reach for the drink Adam brought me. Taking a giant gulp, I begin coughing harder when the alcohol hits my throat.

Adam takes the glass from my hand, and Chloe hands me a bottle of water. Taking a sip, the water soothes the burn of the alcohol.

"What the hell. Why are you two drinking hard liquor this early?"

"I didn't realize there was an appropriate time to drink liquor," Chloe says, sitting back in her chair and crossing her arms over her chest.

"A drink that strong should be illegal."

"She doesn't like rum and Cherry Coke," Adam says, his statement directed at Chloe.

"That's fine. More for us. Plus, she has a dozen bottles of wine at home to choose from."

They continue their banter, talking about me as if I'm not in the room. Every few seconds, Chloe's eyes drift in my direction, scanning my face for a reaction.

She's not going to get one.

"Anyway, are you ready to go, how did you put it, Chloe? Fuck each other's brains out?"

Adam's laughter comes to an abrupt halt as he reaches for my hand and pulls me out of my chair.

"We'll be back later," he yells behind us as he slams Chloe's door closed.

Stopping in the middle of the hallway, Adam looks left and right, realizing he has no idea which way we're headed. Putting him out of his misery, I pull my keys from my purse and step in front of the door next to Chloe's.

"Are the walls thin?" he jokes, realizing exactly how close I live to Chloe.

"Paper thin," I say as I push open the door, attempting to drop his hand as I walk through.

He's not having it. He grips me tighter and follows behind me, kicking the door closed as he spins me into his arms.

"You know, we don't have to go to bed right now," he whispers in my ear.

"Are you asking me to have sex with you in the kitchen?"

"Not unless that's what you want. I was thinking we could make out for a while, maybe take our time. Act like teenagers for a bit and then when it's too much to handle, we could move to the bedroom."

"I like the way you think." Pushing out of his arms, I flip on the kitchen light and pull a bottle of sweet white wine from the fridge. "Want a glass?"

Pouring us each a glass while Adam shows himself around my apartment, my nerves start to settle in. In the five years since moving here, there's only one other time a man has been in my apartment. His name was Ben, and we dated for close to a year right after I moved here.

He reminded me of my ex, Liam. He was tall, lean, and funny. Devilishly handsome. Most of all, he was protective of what was his. A trait Liam lost after what happened to me that night.

That's one of the reasons Liam and I didn't work out. The fact that Ben reminded me of him was why I finally let him go. He was a constant reminder of what I had lost, and reliving that night over and over again was killing me on the inside.

Liam'sin the kitchen when I stumble in the house. I can hear him moving around, probably making himself a pot of coffee. He can't start his day without it, unlike some people.

Don't get me wrong. I enjoy coffee, but if I had to give it up, I'd still be able to function like a normal person. Liam would not.

"Liam," I call out as reach out to the wall for support.

As I was walking up the driveway, I felt the pool of liquid in my pants begin to slide down my thighs. When I stopped on the porch to get my key from my sock and unlock the door, I realized exactly what kind of liquid it was.

Blood.
