Moving in Together

"Thanks for meetingwith me on a Sunday," I say as I take a seat across from June.

While Adam was attempting to air out the apartment of smoke Friday night, I sent her a text asking her to meet me today. Instead of sharing with Adam that night, I kept all my ideas to myself. It gave me time to formulate a better plan, one that would hopefully work for everyone.

"No problem. I'm assuming this is about our conversation the other day," she says, blowing across the surface of her coffee before taking a sip.

She's dressed as if she were headed to the office. Her laptop is on the table in front of her, and sitting on top of it is a file folder with my name on it. She's come prepared for the unexpected.

"It is. I'd like to discuss a few options I came up with."

"I didn't realize there were options," she remarks, lifting an eyebrow at me suspiciously.

"I think there can be. If you'll give me the chance to explain, I'm hoping we can come to an agreement on one."

June stares at me for a moment before nodding for me to continue. Placing my hands in my lap to keep them from shaking, I launch into my pitch for option number one.

In a nutshell, I'd work from home four days and be in the office one day a week.

Judging by the look on her face, she doesn't like it. However, she counters my idea with one of her own.

Work from home two days a week and from the office three days.

I'm hoping my face tells a similar story to hers. I'm not crazy about her idea. It means keeping my apartment versus staying in a hotel room one night a week. Her defense is that it's more stable.

"Have you thought about becoming a consultant?" she finally says after we've gone back and forth for almost an hour.

Adam is expecting me home any time. I didn't think this would take as long as it has already, and we've gotten nowhere.

"What do you mean?"

"You've worked with our consultants before. They don't have offices. They work from home and strictly as needed. It would require you to come to the office on occasion, but otherwise, you would work from wherever you are. The pay is structured differently and there are no benefits. It sounds to me that it’s the best fit for what you want."

"What about my seat on the board?"

Leaning back in her chair, June runs her hand through her short brown locks and lets out a sigh.

"The board is made up of employees within the company, past and present. The only members that aren't currently employees have retired and kept their seats. You can talk to them, but more than likely, you'd have to give up your seat."

A small price to pay to still be able to do what I love and have Adam in my life. All the time. Day and night.

No weekend visits.

No traveling to see one another.

He says he'll move here because location doesn't matter to him. Well, it matters to me. I don't want him to leave his home for me. It's a decision I'd regret later on. I can feel it in my heart.

"That's a chance I'm willing to take, I think."

Smiling, June nods, opens her laptop, and begins typing.

"What are you doing?"

"Emailing human resources. You're officially on vacation as of today. You have six weeks you need to use up right now, but I'm only putting in three weeks. That should be enough time for you to make a decision."

"I don't need time, June. This is what I want to do."
