“Where are you going?”

Kane thrusts his arms into his winter coat, grumbling to himself.

“Zeta house. Apparently, Scarlet slipped and twisted her ankle. She called Mya, who’s with Brady, and he asked me to go over there and check on her until they can get there.”

Scarlet’s hurt.

Sucking in a deep breath, I try to act casual as I ask if he needs any help.

“You could go instead of me.”

Happily, but I don’t want to sound too eager. He’d see right through me. There’s not much that gets by him.

“Why did you agree if you didn’t want to go?” I ask, attempting not to look excited at the prospect of seeing Scarlet, especially since she’s injured. I also know the answer to my question, but I’m going to force him to say it out loud.

“You know damn well why I’m going over there.”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.” I try to sound innocent, but I’m practically laughing as I watch his face turn red.

“I can’t believe I let you talk me into anything. He’s going to be pissed when he finds out I broke into his phone and sent that text.”

No, he’s not. He got the girl. He’s going to be a smiling bastard for a long time. It won’t matter that I took it upon myself to push them back together. I’ve always seen how he looked at her. How he pined after her. He’s loved her for years but never did anything about it.

Until he grew a pair and manned up.

It’s a great story, actually.

Found the girl. Became her friend. Fell in love. Spent years apart. Finally went after her. Got the girl then lost her.

All they needed was a little nudge, so that’s what I did.

But I couldn’t have done it without Kane’s help. He possessed the tech savvy skills I needed to exploit.

“He’s a happy man these days. I don’t think he’s going to hold a grudge. Plus, why do you think he sent you over there. They’re probably a little busy, if you know what I mean.”

Kane rolls his eyes as he tosses me my jacket. “You’re coming with me. Consider it my fee for helping you.”

“Does this make us even?”

“Not a chance.”

He answered exactly the way I expected him to.

Not that I protest. Scarlet needs me. At least, that’s what I let myself believe as we trudge down the sidewalk. The snowfall’s gotten heavier since I returned from my meeting with her this morning. If I hadn’t locked myself in my room the rest of the day, I would have known how shitty the weather was.

But I was focused. Inspired.

And four hours later, I’ve perfected her song.

About the night we met.

Not that she’ll ever hear it.

Knocking twice, Kane checks the handle when no one answers the door. Finding it unlocked, he pushes it open and calls out to Scarlet as we close it behind us.

“Hey.” Scarlet limps into the room a few seconds later, her hand pressed against the wall to help her balance, her nose scrunched up in pain. Her head is turned down, her eyes trained on her injured ankle as she slowly makes her way toward us. “Sorry it took me a second. Thanks for com—”
