For about five seconds.
The moment her petite hands touch me, landing on my hips and pulling me closer, my eyes fly open.
“I’m sorry, Scarlet.”
“For what?” Her hand slides up my torso and back down as she speaks.
“For wanting to kiss you again.”
“Then kiss me.”
“I can’t do that. You’re in a relationship with someone else, and no matter how much I wish that person were me, that’s not the case.”
Her hands stop their inspection of my abdomen as she leans back, looking directly into my eyes.
“I’m single.”
“Since when?” My question is barely audible as I suck in a breath and hold it.
“A few hours ago.”
Shit. The last thing I want is to be her rebound. The reason her relationship failed. Or both.
Did she break up with him because I kissed her? Does she feel guilty about that? Did he break up with her because she was honest with him?
“Why?”
“Why what? Why’d we break up?” With the slight nod of my head she continues. “Lots of reasons. Mainly because I don’t trust him. I think he’s been cheating on me for a while. Even if that wasn’t the case, we should have broken up a while ago.”
I want to strangle the bastard for hurting her. Who would cheat on Scarlet? She’s perfect. Gorgeous. Kind. Sweet. A dream come true. I’ve known it from the second I laid eyes on her. He had her, and he screwed it up. Threw her away.
“Did you love him?”
Without hesitating, she shakes her head.
“I said the words, but I never felt them. Or maybe I did in the beginning, but I haven’t in a long time.”
“Did you tell him I kissed you?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“It was over long before this morning. Dinner tonight was just… I guess it helped me realize that I didn’t feel anything for him anymore except maybe contempt.”
Stepping between her knees, I cup her cheeks and stare into her eyes. “And how do you feel now?”
“Right now?”
“Yes. What do you feel this very second?”
Her mouth parts, but no words come out. I wait patiently, stroking her face with my thumbs.
“I feel … everything.”
Leaning in close, I whisper against her lips before claiming them. “Good.”
