ME: You need to start planning this party ASAP.

His reply is instant, which tells me that he’s already bored, probably sitting on his couch at home.

MAX: I’m on it. I actually just started putting together a guest list.

ME: Who do you have so far?

Aside from our Kappa brothers, he only has a handful of people. The Graham brothers, his sisters, and his sisters’ friends. Minus one notable Zeta sister.

ME: You do realize that if you invite Declan, he’s going to bring Kendall whether you put her on the list or not. If she comes, she’s going to bring some of the Zeta sisters with her. As long as they have the cover charge, I’m going to let them in.

MAX: You said exclusive party.

ME: I also tell you not to be a dick all the time. Since when did you start listening to me?

MAX: Fine. I’ll add Kendall to the list, but I’m not letting Cleo in no matter what. I need one night without her breathing down my neck.

MAX: How did your meeting go, BTW?

ME: Fine. Cleo had the same idea as you and sent Scarlet instead.

I wasn’t planning on telling him, but now that I have, I need to cover my ass a little. He’s going to see right through me; I can already feel it. But if I don’t say something, it’ll be even more obvious.

ME: Sweet girl. You should add her to the list. Actually, you can add all the Zetas with the exception of Cleo.

MAX: Done. Who else?

Wow! I didn’t expect him to let the conversation go without at least a little probing. Maybe a dirty joke. He must really be feeling off his game right now.

ME: I’ll ask my sisters if they want to come down, but I doubt they will. I have to call about the gala anyway. Scarlet wants us to get our families to buy tickets, so we sell more this year. You should talk to your mom while you’re home and see if she wants to buy a ticket. Make Finn do the same.

MAX: I’ll ask the Grahams myself. I’m headed over there in a little bit for a get-together. Finn invited a few people from high school. If you’re not busy, you could always drive over and join us. Crash at my place tonight.

Tempting but I doubt my piece of shit, fifteen-year-old Suburban would make it that far. I need new tires, and I think the gas gage is broken. I’d rather not risk it.

ME: Thanks for the offer. I’m gonna clean this place up a little and figure out how we’re going to set up for the party. We’ll need to build a little stage like last time.

Hopefully we still have the pieces of that masterpiece somewhere. Probably in the shed out back. Which I’ll have to shovel a path to if I have any hopes of getting it open.

MAX: You know where to find us if you change your mind.

MAX: Oh and tell Scarlet I said hello.

There he is. The asshole I know, love, and want to punch almost every time he opens his mouth.

ME: Uh, okay. Not sure what you’re alluding to, but she’s not here. Nice try. You can tell her yourself if she shows up on NYE.

MAX: Really? I was sure you would have swept her off her feet by now. Haven’t you had a thing for her since Freshman year?

How the hell does he know this? I’ve never told anyone about that night. Not even Kane, and I tell him everything. Most of the time, things he doesn’t want to hear.

ME: Not sure what you’re talking about. I barely know the girl.

MAX: Right…

I don’t even bother to reply to his last text. Instead, I focus on my plans for the house. It’ll take me a few days, but I have the time. The house will be spotless when the guys start returning, and if I’m lucky, I’ll have the stage built and ready for the party.
