With the smaller living space at the back of the house, you could barely hear the music from the sidewalk. It’s not ideal, since the stage is going to take up a decent amount of room, but it’s necessary.

“Whatever you want, man. It’s your show. I’m just here to help. Which brings me to my next point. What do you need me to do?” he asks, looking eager to get started.

“Not much. We still have two days to get everything together. I think all we need is to reserve a keg for that night. I don’t want to start putting the stage up until the afternoon of the show because we’re going to have to clear out furniture.”

Turning so his back is to me, Max says, “Cool. I’ve got a few things I need to do today, so I’ll stop by the liquor store and secure a keg while I’m out.”

A few things to do.

He’s up to something. It’s clear in the tone of his voice. I just have to figure out what.

“Finn back in town yet?” I ask before he can disappear.

“He and Lo are staying one more night in Oak Harbor and coming back tomorrow afternoon. Lo and Kendall have plans tomorrow or something.” His answer sounds rehearsed and he’s still not looking at me.

“You staying here tonight?” That got his attention. Gazing over his shoulder, Max raises an eyebrow before answering me.

“Wasn’t planning on it. Why?”

“Just wondering.”

He has the apartment to himself. That spells trouble for Max. Especially if his mystery girl is around. We all know about her; we just don’t know who she is.

As soon as Max leaves, I reach for my phone, but not before Kane barges into my room.

“What the hell do you want?”

“I think you know exactly what I want. Information. And now that Max is gone, I plan on getting answers.” He’s been back less than an hour and this is the second time he’s tried to get me to talk. Not to mention the text messages he sent while he was back home.

“You sound like a chick,” I point out. “Like you want the latest gossip.”

“You can’t call it gossip if it’s the truth.” He has a point, but I’m not about to tell him that.

“You can call it whatever you want because I’m not telling you anything.”

“Which means something happened between you two.” Yup.

“Even if something did, it’s none of your damn business.”

“Says the guy who’s smiling like an idiot because he’s thinking about the girl right now.”

Steeling my features, I glare at my best friend across the room. He’s taunting me on purpose, so I’ll give him what he wants. It’s not going to work. There’s nothing to tell. We made out. It got a little hot and heavy. He won’t get a single detail out of me, though. Not until I figure out what’s going on between us, and I can’t do that until I talk to Scarlet.

Which has proved to be impossible recently.

Kane glances over his shoulder, breaking eye contact—if you can call it that since I can’t see his damn eyes behind his stupid sunglasses—his attention drawn down the hall. A slow smirk spreads across his face, and then he walks away without a word.

Jumping up, I’m about to close my bedroom door when Scarlet appears in the doorway. It’s clear from the dark shadows beneath her eyes that she’s been crying, and she looks to be on the verge of breaking down again.

“Hey, can we talk?”

No words any guy ever wants to hear, but I’m also not about to turn her away. Especially considering I’ve worried about her all day after not hearing from her. The fact she’s here should relieve the ache in my chest, but the sight of her only has it intensifying.

Ushering her in my room, I help her out of her coat before closing and locking the door behind her.

“What’s—"

Scarlet falls into my arms and lets out a guttural cry.
