Scarlet’s beensilent on the subject of Gia’s situation for almost two weeks now. It feels like she’s put a wall up between us, and it’s killing me.

Yes, I see her almost every day.

We talk every night before crawling into bed. Sometimes while we’re in bed; her at the Zeta house, me, alone in my room. But she refuses to say anything about what happened between Max and Gia or what she knows about the situation.

And, of course, Max has been mute on the topic as well. In fact, he’s been avoiding the house all together. He practically sprinted out the door after our meeting last night.

“I need you to do me a favor,” I say to Kane as I push his door open. His back is to me, his focus on one of the three computer screens he has running right now. He doesn’t even bother to turn around and look at me as he answers.

“I’m a little busy.”

“I need you to talk to Cleo.” His shoulders stiffen momentarily, the only sign he gives that he heard what I said. “Something happened at the Kappa house with Gia, and Scarlet’s not talking. It’s fucking with my relationship.”

“Didn’t realize you two were together.”

“Fuck you. Yes, we’re together. You’ve seen us on campus. You’ve seen her at my shows.”

Hell, he’s caught her coming and going from my room plenty of times.

“Doesn’t mean you’re dating. Just means you guys are friends. I haven’t heard your headboard beating against the wall at night.”

Asshole.

“Just because we haven’t slept together doesn’t mean we’re not together. Sex doesn’t make a relationship real.”

Though it would be a nice perk. Scarlet beneath me. Me inside her. Watching her come undone, knowing it was me who brought her pleasure.

“No.” His voice is firm as he taps on his keyboard.

“Why not?”

Dumb question. I know exactly why he doesn’t want to talk to Cleo. The same reason I don’t want to. She’s ferocious. A little bit scary, if I’m being honest. A real ball buster, especially if you’re a Kappa brother.

Another thing we have Max to thank for.

She’s also the one person who will have the information I need.

“I don’t want to get involved. This has nothing to do with me.”

“I’ll owe you big time.”

“I’m going to have to pass. Man up and talk to her yourself.”

Growling in frustration, I slam Kane’s door behind me as I leave. I can’t talk to Cleo without feeling like I’m going behind Scarlet’s back. I don’t want to lose her trust.

Pulling my phone from my back pocket, I make one last-ditch attempt to get answers as I lean against the wall in the hall outside Kane’s bedroom door.

ME: Can you come over?

SCARLET: Sure. Everything okay?

ME: Of course. I just want to see you. I feel like it’s been a while since we’ve had a moment to ourselves to talk about anything other than the gala.

SCARLET: You want to talk?

ME: Unless there’s something else you would rather do. I have a few ideas…
