Colt

Watchingher walk away is a sight I both love and hate all at the same time. I love the view and hate that the loss of her feels like a knife to my heart. Even though I know I’ll see her again in a few minutes. All of her.

I wait until she’s exited the room before I follow, not wanting the moment to look suspicious to anyone who might be watching. Not that I care what anyone else thinks, especially our friends. We’re not trying to hide our relationship the way some others have. Not that they were able to hide much.

Finn was desperate for Willow, and you could see it every time they were in the same room together. Declan and Kendall did a better job of keeping their relationship lowkey, though once they came clean, I would have rather they kept it a secret. Too much PDA for my liking.

Hypocrite.

Am I? Sort of. I mean, I don’t try to hide the way I feel for Scarlet in public, but I also don’t attack her mouth any chance I get when we’re in the company of others. I hold her hand. Keep her close. I leave everything else for when we’re in the privacy of my room, or hers.

Or an occasional storage closet.

Mainly because I know once I touch her, kiss her, I won’t be able to stop.

Micah and Alexis were able to slide under the radar for a lot longer than any of us realized. Had we paid better attention, we would have figured it out the first night. When we heard them going at it in their tent. But the noise was muffled, it sounded further away, and they’d been distancing themselves from each other all weekend.

So I thought it was Declan and Kendall.

Kane slept through it.

Julian and Piper thought they were sly, but as soon as we found out they were working together, it was a no-brainer. He’d been in love with her for years, and she was the only one who didn’t see it. It was only a matter of time before she fell into his arms.

Sweet little Evie is as scandalous as her big brother. I’m still not sure how long she was sneaking around with Leo before they finally decided to come clean. For Leo’s sake, I hope Max never finds out the full story either. His willpower to not punch the kid when he walks into the room is slowly evaporating. I saw it earlier tonight when Evie walked in with Leo’s hand dangerously close to her ass.

Brady … that man is an anomaly. For as good at disappearing as he has always been, it was clear he wanted Mya before he even made his move. Sometimes I think the only reason he came to the house for parties was to see her. But he’s a stubborn ass, so it took a little nudge in the right direction for him to see the situation for what it was. His destiny.

And then there’s Max. I’m guessing it’s his ego that’s stopping him from going after the girl he really wants. We’ve all known there’s been someone for years, but he’s been a master at keeping her identity a secret. It started freshman year, right after we all met. I remember him talking about a girl, but he didn’t know her name yet. Then suddenly, he stopped.

But he’s never dated anyone since then. Not seriously anyway. Not until Gia, and we all know that’s a faux pas. Just for show. To get under the girl’s skin. And if it’s who I think it might be, Kora, he’s going about it all wrong. Instead of looking irritated by his sudden interest in Gia, she’s barely glanced his way all night.

How do I know?

I’ve been following Max’s murderous glare most of the evening. That’s how I saw the look he shot Leo in warning. How I saw the way he was staring at Finn and Willow when they weren’t paying attention. And the steam billowing out of his ears when Kora walked in on Beau’s arm.

Beau, the guy he tried to pummel into the ground on New Year’s Eve.

And now we all know why.

I’ve been keeping tabs on him to make sure we don’t have a repeat of that night. The last thing we need is Max throwing punches in the middle of the gala. That wouldn’t reflect well on the Kappa or Zeta house, and if Max starts a fight, I have a feeling Cleo would chop off his balls. Or, at least, try.

“Colt.” The hair on the back of my neck stands up, his voice causing an uneasiness to settle inside me.

Forcing a smile, I turn to face him, trying to swallow the urge to punch him.

If Max starting a fight will make us look back, me hitting Scarlet’s father will look worse.

“Mr. Newton. How can I help you?”

“Have you seen my daughter?”

“I believe she went to check on a few things. She should be back soon.”

I’m not about to tell him she went to get naked in the limo. That’s she waiting for me. I have a feeling he wouldn’t appreciate me imparting that knowledge on him.

“Can we speak for a moment?”

A warning alarm blares in my head as I find myself nodding in agreement. When he motions for us to take a seat at the closest table, I follow in silence, unease settling in the middle of my chest.
