“He wants to meet with me.”

“That’s good right?”

“It could be.”

Giving my leg a squeeze of encouragement, Scarlet rests her head on my shoulder. The rest of the ride back to the Zeta house is made in complete silence.

Kane and Cleo are on opposite sides of the car. Gia and Max are sitting between them, much the same way they were when we rode to the gala. And Scarlet and I are opposite the four of them, waiting for something interesting to happen.

It never does. Not until we all start to climb out of the car.

“Cleo, is this yours?” Gia asks, holding up a tube of lipstick.

“Yeah. Thanks,” Cleo answers, her words rushed as she tries to slip past Gia and out the open door.

“What was it doing over here?” Gia continues, placing her hand on Cleo’s forearm to stop her from escaping.

“I don’t know. It must have fallen out of my purse.”

“You sat over there the entire time.”

Shit. Things are about to unravel.

“Is that the same one you let me borrow?” Scarlet interjects, stealing the tube of lip color from Cleo’s hand. “Wait. This is the one I didn’t want to use. I tossed it on the seat before we headed inside earlier. Sorry.”

Judging by the way Gia is shifting her attention between Cleo and Scarlet, she’s not buying it. Thankfully she doesn’t push for a better explanation, releasing her hold on Cleo’s arm and allowing her to escape.

“I’ll walk the girls to the door,” I offer, but Max is already out of the car.

“I got this. Talk to your boy,” he growls, leaning in so the girls won’t overhear him before slamming the door.

Shit!

“He knows,” I state, not bothering to look in Kane’s direction.

“Yeah.”

“What are you going to do about it?”

“Nothing.” He sounds indifferent to the situation, which is normal for him, even though I’d expect him to be a little on edge. This is Max were talking about after all.

“Nothing? You’re just going to let him have his say?”

“He can say anything he wants. He can threaten to kick me out. He can do whatever he has to do to make himself feel better, but this has nothing to do with him. It never has, yet we’ve let his opinion make decisions for us. I’m done following Max’s laws, Colt. In a few short months we’re all graduating. No more Kappa house. No more Max calling the shots. So I say it ends now. At least where I’m concerned it does.”

It never has, yet we’ve let his opinion make decisions for us.

He has been seeing her for years. That one statement just confirmed it. And as his best friend, he didn’t trust me enough to tell me.

“Is she worth it?” is all I ask as we wait patiently for Max to return.

“Yes, but I’m going to have to prove it to her. After hiding our feelings for years, I’m sure she has her doubts.”

“Years?” I ask, hoping he’ll elaborate.

“Yes, Colt. Years. I lied to you when you asked. I’ve known Cleo since middle school. We were together in high school. She’s the reason I’m at Lake State. I followed her, the way she wanted. It was part of the plan, but I’m tired of the games we play. I’m ready to prove to her that we are meant to be together. And I’m not about to let Max stand in my way.”

My jaw was still hangingopen when Max finally returned, immediately launching into an interrogation. One in which Kane never said a word. He didn’t confirm nor deny Max’s allegations. He didn’t even flinch.
