Ashley sighed before her lips tightened into a straight line.

“No.Don’t do that. That manlovesyou and your little boy. Go hear him out and let him beg for your forgiveness.”

“Fine,” I huffed. “I’ll go down and talk to him.”

Getting to my feet, I carried my mug to the kitchen and placed it in the sink before going into the guest bathroom to brush my teeth and change. I hesitated for a moment before making my feet move toward Ashley’s apartment door.

“Good luck. I can watch Brendan for as long as you need.” She shot me a wink, and I rolled my eyes.

I grabbed the handle, yanked open the door, and yelped when a large body fell back onto the tiled foyer.

“Ow,” Rhett groaned, reaching up and rubbing the back of his head. His eyes opened and latched onto mine as I stood over him with crossed arms.

“My angel,” he muttered. “Is this heaven?”

Ashley’s semi-controlled laughs behind me made me turn and glare at her. “This is your fault.”

Her laughter subsided. “Um, first off, this is all on the two of you and your lack of communication. Second, how was I supposed to know he didn’t listen when I told him to go home?” She continued into the kitchen and left us in the foyer.

Rhett groaned again as he pushed himself into a sitting position. His hand went to the back of his head again while his eyes found mine once more. “Good morning.”

My eyes narrowed at him. “You stayed in the hallway? All night? Did you even get any sleep?”

“Yeah, a few hours, I guess. I couldn’t risk you running away from me again before I had a chance to tell you I’m sorry.” He sent me a reluctant half smile.

I let my eyes close for a second as I took a deep breath. “I shouldn’t have left the way I did last night.”

He put his hand up, stopping me, before he stood to his feet. His arm moved like he might reach out for me, but he pulled it back to his side.

“Can we go somewhere and talk?”

Instead of confidence, his face was full of uncertainty as his eyes scanned over my face.

I nodded. “Yeah. I’d like that. Let me make sure Ashley’s okay with Brendan.” Before I could take more than a few steps, Ashley appeared from the kitchen.

“I told you I’m good. Now go.”

“Eavesdropping?”

“Not on purpose. The apartment isn’t that big. Sound travels.”

“Mm-hmm. Yousureyou’re fine to watch Brendan for a bit?”

“Of course.” She nodded toward Rhett. “She better come back smiling, or I’m going to deck you this time.”

“I figured,” Rhett said, sighing.

I followed him out, and he placed his hand on the small of my back as we descended the stairs and walked to his truck. Rhett’s silence in the seat next to me had me freaking out.

What if he realized he couldn’t do this, and all of this was a way to try to end things amicably? Or maybe he wanted to slow down. I mean, I thought we were headed toward moving in. I was an idiot for assuming that and bringing over so much of our crap to leave at his place. I bet he noticed, and that was what he wanted to talk about. Maybe I was the one moving too fast.

But what I needed to figure out was what was best for Brendan. I couldn’t keep confusing him. Rhett either wanted a life with us or not, and we needed to lay it all out and decide together what our timeline should be moving forward. No more assumptions or miscommunications.

Or running away.

Webothneeded to do better.

The drive to The Dock was only ten minutes, and I was surprised I didn’t break skin with the way I chewed on my bottom lip the whole ride.
