I don’t make it a habit of sticking my nose in other wolves’ business. I pride myself on my ability to delegate successfully. If I micromanaged every wolf in my pack, it would be a clusterfuck of epic proportions. We certainly wouldn’t be as strong as we are now.

But Luca is hiding something.

I’ve never had any reason to doubt my Beta, but he’s also never tried to reject an order before. I was relieved last night when he apologized and backtracked, but now that he’s raised my suspicions, there’s no going back. I make my way discreetly out toward the cabin his parents left to him.

My Beta usually stays in the pack house in the room next to mine, but he chose to stay out here last night. Another thing that raised my suspicions.

I watch from behind the tree line as Luca steps out of the house precisely when I expected. He closes the door behind him, hesitates, and then fumbles with the door. He’s locking it, my wolf chimes in, as if I can’t see that for myself.

I can’t recall any time before that I saw him lock this door. No one bothers the few houses out this way. They’re well hidden from the main road, so humans don’t know they exist, and they’re far enough onto pack land that even rogues never make it inland this far.

Whatever secret he’s protecting, it’s time for me to put a stop to it. I can’t afford a Beta I can’t trust.

I stay hidden until Luca is completely out of sight. I can hear the mind link as he greets the team I set up for him. He lets me know they’re heading out, and I give only a grunt back in response. I’m so pissed off right now that I don’t dare give anything away over the mind link while other wolves can hear us.

Disorder between the ranks is dangerous. I don’t want to concern my pack.

Satisfied that they won’t be turning back for anything, I start across the little clearing in front of the house, but then something sends me reeling backward. That smell, my wolf whines.Sniff, he urges me, wanting me to take it fully in.

In spite of myself, I take a big whiff of the air, and the sweet, indescribable scent assaults all my senses.

“It can’t be,” I mutter. Because I recognize that scent all too distinctly. There’s only one wolf I’ve ever encountered who smells like that. So sweet and enticing that it’s fucking painful with every step I force myself to take closer to the house.

My wolf is losing his shit too, which doesn’t help.

Yes. Yes. Yes. Smell her. She’s in there. Go. Hurry.

“Shut the fuck up,” I snarl under my breath. On this matter, we don’t share in the fucking excitement.

The last few steps toward the front door are enough to let my anger build to epic proportions. I know I’m not being rational, but instead of knocking to confirm my suspicions, I hit the front door with enough force to break the latch, sending the whole thing slamming against the inside wall so hard I hear the plaster of the wall crack.

The living space is empty, but I hear stirring coming from the direction of the bedroom. The fucking bedroom,my wolf growls. That does nothing to ease the anger in my chest.

My footsteps are so heavy you can practically hear the house rattling around me as I storm toward the room, shoving that door open with just as much force. And there she is, stopping me dead in my tracks in the doorway.

Her blue eyes widen, and next to her pale skin and tiny stature, it makes her look like a china doll. She’s standing on the opposite side of the bed, looking like she just rolled out of it, but she takes a couple of slow steps back as recognition dawns in her eyes.

My wolf offers the ultimate blow.Mate.

No. No, I rejected this girl already. She’s not our mate anymore. She accepted my rejection free and clear, there should be nothing left tying my wolf to her. Fuck.

Mate, he returns resolutely.

“What the hell are you doing on my land?” I demand, my voice harsh enough that spit flies out of my mouth with the question. I expect her to cower at my tone, but she pushes her shoulders back, standing up straighter as she looks away from me dismissively.

“Don’t worry, I’m not staying,” she says haughtily. “I was only waiting for Luca to go. If you had waited another hour to come barging in, I would have already been gone.”

Based on the fact that she’s got major bedhead and dark circles under her eyes, I highly doubt she was planning to be gone so soon. Still, my wolf jolts at the idea of her leaving.Calm your shit down,I warn him.

“You’ll go when I say you’ll go,” the words come out before I’ve properly thought them through.

My wolf is smug as hell, but inside all I can feel is a darkness swirling. Keeping power like mine always comes with a dark side, and this girl is bringing it fully out of me. Something that usually only happens in the tensest of circumstances. The confusion certainly doesn’t help either. My wolf is still adamantly repeating, mate, over and over again.

“I’m leaving,” she says, but her voice wavers, and I can see her body sway slightly in my direction.

Whatever has gotten into my wolf seems to be affecting her too.
