I clear the bowl of pasta, my stomach aching in protest of eating so much after going too long without eating at all. I pick up the clothes and spread them out on the bed to get a good look, wrinkling my nose as I realize they’re going to drown me. The leggings clearly belong to someone a foot or two taller than me at least, and the tank top is big enough that I know it won’t actually cover me properly.

Groaning, I ball the clothes up and throw them at the door, wishing it was Dominic’s head.

“Inconsiderate fucking prick,” I mutter as I stomp across the room to his closet. I checked out the inside of the walk-in when I was looking for an escape route, and I know he’s got clothes to spare.

I head straight to the back of the closet and choose a t-shirt at random. I glance at the logo, see a construction company logo, and let it fall. No way in hell am I wearing his company logo. Instead, I reach back up and pull a band shirt down. I don’t recognize the name of the band, but Dominic hardly strikes me as the rockstar type, so it seems like a safe enough choice.

With that decided, I walk back into the bedroom and head straight for the door. I don’t remember hearing the lock click behind him. Sure enough, the door handle turns in my grip.

I open it to find a man on the other side, his gaze landing on me immediately. He looks more surprised to see me than I am to see him.

“Hi,” I greet him suspiciously.

“Uh, hello,” he returns in a deep voice. I guess he didn’t get the memo about ignoring me.

“Where did Bambi and Corvette go?” I glance around the corner as if the women will be nearby, just waiting to do a jump scare worthy of the greatest B-movie horror films.

The guy chokes on a laugh. “Maya and Angelica,” he corrects, “I assume that’s who you’re talking about?”

I shrug in response because if I knew the women’s names, clearly I wouldn’t need to call them anything different.

“Alpha asked me to relieve them. He didn’t mention he had, ah, company?” His gaze drops for a split-second then quickly darts up to my face again, his cheeks tinging pink.

I don’t care about that. I’m more caught up on what he just said. “So your Alpha asks you to guard what you think is an empty room and you do that no questions asked?” That’s the most absurd thing I’ve ever heard.

“Ma’am, if Alpha wants something guarded, I know he has a good reason,” the guy reassures me.

I hate the reverence in his voice because it doesn’t mesh with the asshole I’ve seen so far. Still, I guess it stands to reason that any wolf that wants to maintain a position as Alpha has to be at least somewhat likable to his people. That doesn’t have to extend to me because I’m not part of his pack. And I don’t know what the deal with his father is, but clearly there’s a story there.

There’s no comfort in realizing Dominic might not be so bad, that he’s just that bad to me.

Well maybe if you tried a little harder,my wolf suggests.

Shaking her off, I study the guy, looking for a weak point. Unfortunately for him, that appears to be everything about him. He’s not in a protective stance, he’s not watching his surroundings, and he’s built a bit like a lumberjack so I’m pretty sure I can outrun him even in human form.

I test my theory, taking a few more steps out of the room. The guard steps back, leaving space between us as if he’s scared of seeming improper. It’s almost too easy.

I tense to run.

“Don’t even fucking think about it.”

Dominic appears out of nowhere, a deep scowl on his face as he looks between the guard and I. He reaches out for me, his arm snaking around my waist and his hold tightening before I can move out of his grasp. Not that it stops me from trying.

“Alpha.” The guard dips his head with respect.

“Get lost,” Dominic growls at him. Maybe he’s bad to everyone after all, and this guy is just too dumb to realize it. “And you get the hell back in there.” He points at the room until I tuck tail and go back inside.

I’m still tempted to try running, but I’m not stupid enough to think I’m going to get away with trying that twice. I need to be smart about it. Smarter than I’ve been these last couple times.

“Don’t talk to my men.”

“What?” I turn to watch Dominic slam the bedroom door closed.

“Luca already made a mistake bringing you here, the last thing I need is any of my other men getting ideas. So don’t talk to them again.” He’s not even looking at me as he says it, which is one of the more demeaning things he’s done since this whole thing started this morning.

I take a deep breath, desperately trying to hold onto my rational side.

“If I’m causing such problems for you, that could be easily solved by letting me go home like I wanted in the first place,” I point out.
