Chapter 9

Teamwork is important. It helps to put the blame on someone else.

Cole

Lyric escorts me to his golf cart. I’m surprised since the bed and breakfast is mere doors down the street, and everyone in this town prefers to walk whenever they can.

“Hop in,” he says before fishing out his phone. He puts it on speaker before he dials. “Meet me at the falls,” he says when the phone connects.

“Dude, this better be important. I’m celebrating my engagement with the woman I love,” the voice on the other end of the phone grumbles.

“Ellery’s pregnant, and I’m with the baby daddy.”

Holy crap. Ellie’s pregnant. I didn’t see that coming. Is the pregnancy why she’s been avoiding my phone calls and not returning my texts? Is she afraid I’ll run the other way? Not happening. I would never abandon my child.

“Does Ashlyn know?”

Ashlyn as in Ellie’s younger sister? Who is this guy and why did Lyric phone him? I need to get out of here before things get any weirder than they already are.

“I can …” I wave toward the inn.

Lyric shakes his head and points to the golf cart. “Get in.”

Despite having a hunch this has nothing to do with his position as the chief of police, I don’t dare ignore a police officer.

“Meet you in five,” Lyric says and ends the phone call.

“What’s going on?” I ask as he jumps into the golf cart.

He grunts in response.

“Am I in trouble?”

He snorts.

“Can you speak in actual sentences instead of sounds?” I know I’m pushing it. Winter Falls may be a tiny town in nowhere Colorado, but this man is the Chief of Police regardless of the size of the town.

“I’ll explain when we get there.”

“Where’s there?” He’s not taking me out into the field to shoot me, is he? I’ve read those Lee Child books. I know cops in small towns aren’t always on the up and up.

“The falls.”

The falls? As in the waterfall the town is named after? Ellie told me it’s beautiful at the falls, but I didn’t have a chance to visit the last time I was in town since I had to return to Chicago earlier than I expected.

Less than five minutes later, Lyric pulls the golf cart to a stop at the top of a waterfall. Wow. It is gorgeous. Even though it’s December and most of the trees are barren, the nature remains impressive.

“Follow me,” Lyric orders as he strides toward an open field.

Another golf cart pulls up and I wait as a man climbs out and marches toward me.

My eyes widen when I recognize him. “Holy shit. You’re Rowan Hansley.” Rowan Hansley was one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL before an illegal tackle ruined his knee.

He extends his hand. “And you are?”

“Cole Hawkins.”

“Ellery’s baby daddy.” Lyric’s words are like a slap to the face and effectively put an end to my fanning over the former football player.
