Chapter 16

I don’t have a solution, but I do admire the problem.

My hands shake as I try to slot the key into the lock at my apartment. Unlike other Winter Falls residents, I am a big believer in always locking my door. I have four sisters who don’t understand what personal boundaries are. I’d be a fool to keep my door unlocked, although a locked door doesn’t do much to keep them out some days.

Cole places his hand on my lower back to steady me. His touch is anything but steadying. Instead of calming me, it’s as if electricity rushes out of his fingertips to my back and through my body. I close my eyes and inhale a steadying breath before I decide to spin around and jump the man.

My keys fall to the porch, and he bends to pick them up before reaching over me to unlock the door. Since he’s more than half a foot taller than me, it’s not a difficult feat. Great Scott! The guy’s a giant compared to me. What does this mean for the baby growing inside me? I latch onto the fear with both hands. Anything to forget the mini-shocks still traveling through my body from his touch.

“What’s wrong?”

“I didn’t say anything was wrong.”

He repeats his question instead of calling me the liar I obviously am. “What’s wrong?”

I throw my arms in the air. “You’re a giant! What if our child is your size? My body will never recover.”

The idea of forcing a watermelon out of my body is already less than appealing. But what if the watermelon is some humongous mutant watermelon?

He laughs as he opens the door and guides me inside. “I’m not a giant, although you may be a midget.”

I throw daggers at him with my eyes. “I’m five-foot-two. I am not a midget and referring to a person as a midget is offensive. Thank you for escorting me home.”

“Are you kicking me out?”

“What was your first clue?”

“Don’t you want to know what I want since I won our little bet?”

He knows I do. He’s been teasing me all night about it.

I shrug. “You can tell me tomorrow.”

He smirks and steps closer. My nipples tighten and tingles travel down my body until they reach my core. Maybe he wants sex. I am on board with this plan. I can have this dress off and his pants around his ankles in seconds.

I fist my hands. Stop it, Ellery. I am not having sex with my baby daddy and complicating an already complicated relationship. Great. Now, I’m calling Cole my baby daddy.

He lowers his voice an octave before asking, “You sure you don’t want to know?”

Damn him. He knows his husky voice lights me on fire. “Enough with the teasing,” I manage to croak out. “What do you want for winning?”

He grasps my hand and leads me to the sofa. “Maybe you should sit down for this.”

My eyes widen. I need to sit down? He doesn’t mean— He couldn’t possibly think—

“Calm down, Ellie. I’m not going to force you to have sex with me.”

He’s not? Bummer. No. Wait. I don’t want sex with the man. And I’m not a big fat liar. Good thing I’m wearing a dress because my pants would totally be on fire now.

“What do you want?” I ask as I sit down.

He perches on the edge of my coffee table in front of me. “I want to talk.”

I groan. “What about what I want?”

He squeezes my hands. “You know we need to talk about the baby.”

“I know.” My lips purse. “It doesn’t mean I want to.”
