“Didn’t you enjoy the book, Lilac?” Ashlyn asks.

Lilac purses her lips. “Don’t act all high and mighty with me. I know you didn’t read it either.”

Before Ashlyn can respond with whatever lie she’s planning to tell us, a dog growls and another dog barks before the two of them crash through the baby gate behind the cash register and rush to Juniper who drops to her knees.

“What’s wrong with my babies? Were you feeling trapped by the inhumane baby gate?” She scratches them behind the ears and kisses their snouts.

“Ew.” Ashlyn feigns gagging. “Do you kiss your man with that mouth?”

“I don’t have a man.”

“What about the secret admirer?” Lilac asks.

“Wait a doggone minute! Juniper Berry West has a secret admirer?” Sage asks. “I do not believe it. If I don’t know about it, it can’t be true.”

I snort. Sage thinks being the police dispatcher means she knows everybody’s secrets. She didn’t know mine.

“You don’t know everything going on in this town, Sage. You didn’t know I was pregnant, did you?”

“Of course, we did!”

I shake my head. “I mean before my sisters found out.”

“We knew,” Cayenne claims.

I cross my arms over my chest and tap my toe. “You did? You all knew? Yet you said nothing and told no one?” I’m not buying it.

“We weren’t sure if Cole was the father, which is why we tried hurrying Lilac along with reviewing the bids for the community center,” Sage claims.

Lilac sighs. “It’s true. They tried meddling in the review.”

“And now we know Cole’s the father,” Sage proclaims.

“What we don’t know is how Cole is in the sack,” Feather says.

“Yeah, Ellery, how’s Cole in the sack?” Petal asks.

“Nope. I’m not doing this. If Ashlyn can keep her sex life private, I can, too.”

Ashlyn startles at the sound of her name and glances up from her e-reader. “Leave me out of this.”

Indiana Bones barks in agreement, and I seize the chance to change the topic of conversation. “Why did you bring your dogs, Juniper?”

“Bark Twain is sick. I couldn’t leave him behind at home, and Indiana Bones insisted on coming with.”

“Where’s Waffles?”

Aspen frowns. “You mean the owner of this establishment’s dog? The dog who belongs here? I had to ask Lyric to bring him home since these two don’t play nice.”

“Hey!” Juniper covers her dogs’ ears with her hands. “You’ll hurt their feelings.”

While everyone’s distracted by Juniper and Aspen’s argument, I collapse in the chair next to Ashlyn.

“No time to finish the book this month?”

“Between managing the recording studio and narrating my audiobook assignments, I’ve been busy.”

I nudge her. “And you haven’t been busy trying to make a baby?”
