Chapter 19

There’s only one animal that lies – humans.

Iwake cocooned in a blanket of warmth. I haven’t slept this good in ages. I snuggle into my pillow and blanket. The blanket moans and I freeze. Hell and damnation. I’m not wrapped in a blanket. I’m wrapped in Mav.

What have I done? What kind of idiot am I? The plan was to slowly work our way toward being friends again before – maybe – adding romance to the mix. The plan was not to jump into bed with him at the first opportunity.

Mav brushes my hair from my face. “Stop overthinking things,” he whispers before kissing the spot behind my ear.

I suppress the shiver from his kiss. “I am not overthinking things.”

“Uh-huh. You went from languid in my arms to frozen stiff for no reason at all.”

I force myself to relax. “I was surprised you’re still in bed with me is all. Usually, you depart post-haste the minute the exciting times are over.”

He growls before rolling me until he’s looming over me. “One time. One damn time. You need to stop bringing up the past if you want to go forward.”

I blow out a breath of air. I hate it when he’s right. Actually, I hate it when anyone dares to point out I’ve made a mistake. Having four sisters who jumped down my throat the second I messed up when I was growing up didn’t exactly make me open to listening to others indicate when I’ve made a mistake.

“Do we want to go forward?” I hate how weak my voice sounds, but this man makes me weak.

“June Bug,” he sighs before kissing my nose, “I haven’t made a secret of wanting you back. And yesterday you made me promise to never do a promo stunt with another woman again. I think you want the same thing I do, but you’re scared.”

I narrow my eyes on him. How dare he say I’m scared? I mean, I am. But, still, who does he think he is mentioning it?

“I’m not scared.”

“It’s okay, June Bug. I’m scared, too.”

Wait. What? “You are?”

He kisses my nose again. “Of course, I am. Relationships are difficult. Add in how I’m away shooting a film half of the year and all the attention the media gives me and you don’t exactly have a recipe for an easy relationship.”

“True.”

“But I’m willing to fight for this relationship. I know how it feels to live without you and I don’t want to go back there.”

“And you’ll communicate with me? Tell me where you are and what you’re doing.”

His eyes flash with pain before they fall closed and he leans his forehead against mine. “Yes, June Bug, I will. I promise.”

I decide to pull up my big girl panties. They’re worn and sporting a few holes, but it’s the best I can do. “Okay. Let’s give this relationship thing a try.”

His smile stretches from ear to ear. “Yeah?”

I nod. “Yeah.”

He presses his hard length into my core, but I shove him away. “Nope. We don’t have time. I need to get to the refuge to check on the animals.”

He rolls onto his back with a groan. “Fine. But I am taking you out to breakfast first.”

I freeze. “Breakfast? Together?”

“No. I’m going to sit across the room from you.” He rolls his eyes. “Yes, together.”

I guess we’re really doing this. We’re going to be a couple. Starting this very moment. Eek!

When we enter the diner thirty minutes later holding hands, cheers erupt from the crowd.
