“I can find another position with ease. There is an abundance of positions for qualified environmental engineers with experience. You, however, are more limited with your job options. There’s only one CEO in an engineering company while there are many engineers.”
“Give me a chance to solve the situation before you go throwing away your career.”
“No. I will not jeopardize your career.”
He growls and captures my hands. “And I don’t want you jeopardizing your career.”
I smile up at him. “This is what love is. Putting someone else’s happiness before your own.”
“But I’m not happy with this.”
I ignore the sting of tears in my eyes and continue, “You’ll get over me. You’re perfect. You’ll find another woman.”
He jolts. “Are you breaking up with me?”
“I am,” I manage to say despite finding speaking difficult.
His hands tighten. “But we can solve this. I’ll talk to the shareholders, and we’ll figure it out.”
“No. I will not allow you to risk your career for me. I’m not worth it.”
His hands move to cradle my face. “You’re worth everything to me. I love you.”
“And I love you,” his eyes light up at my admission, “ but I think it’s best if we end our relationship before anyone gets hurt.”
“You’re hurting me now,” he whispers; the pain clear to see in his eyes.
My stomach cramps and I fear I will vomit if I don’t escape soon. I wrench my hands from his and hurry toward the door.
“I’m not letting you go,” he shouts after me.
“I’m afraid you don’t have a choice.”
“There’s always a choice, Lilac. I chose you. You chose me. This will work out.”
“I wish I could believe you,” I murmur as I shut the door behind me.
I rush to my car and drive away as fast as I can without breaking any speed limits. I need to get home because I’m afraid I’m going to have some sort of breakdown.
I know I did the right thing, but the pain is unbelievable. I never realized emotional pain could hurt as bad as a physical injury. This is not a lesson I’m happy to learn.
