“Yes, I have four of them.”

I know she does as I met three of them, but she never shares private information with me. I’m not letting this opportunity pass me by. “Where are you in the mix?”

She sighs. “Please tell me you don’t ascribe to the pseudo-psychology concerning birth order.”

I grin. “One of the middle children, then?”

She narrows her eyes on me. “How did you know?”

“The oldest and the youngest child always insist on telling everyone where they are in the birth order,” I explain.

“Huh. I didn’t realize this. I’ll have to observe my family closer to ascertain if your hypothesis is correct,” she says before making a note in her phone to do just that. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to depart. I’m already late as it is.”

I shrug. “You can be a few minutes late for dinner.”

“We’re not having dinner. Tonight is book club.”

“Book club?”

“Yes, I can read, you know.” She huffs. “And they picked out a book especially for me. Although why a grumpy boss romance with an enemies to lovers theme is for me, I’ll never understand.”

“Your sisters chose a grumpy boss romance for you to read?”

“Are you having auditory perception problems now? Maybe you should have a full physical work up in addition to the MRI.”

“I’m not having auditory perception problems.” But I may be having heart problems since her sisters choosing a grumpy boss romance for her to read means they’re on my side. Maybe being with Lilac isn’t a lost cause after all.

I step forward into the room and shut the door behind me.

“What are you doing? I literally just told you I need to leave. You can’t keep me here against my will. It’s unlawful imprisonment.” She stomps toward me but stops a few feet in front of me.

“Not kidnapping?” I tease as I close the gap between us.

“You don’t appear intent on taking me to a different location.”

I palm her cheek. “No, I’m not.”

“What are you doing?” she asks, but her eyes dilate and she doesn’t move away.

“I’m finally doing what I wanted to do the first time I saw you,” I say as I stare at her pink lips.

“This is a bad idea.”

“Do you want me to stop?”

“No,” she whispers before she grasps the back of my neck and tugs my head down until my lips meet hers.

At the first touch of her soft lips against mine, I know I’ve made a mistake. Not because Lilac is an employee, but because I can easily become addicted to her lips. In fact, I may already be addicted to her taste of peppermint and cherries. Damn do I love cherries.

I wrap my arms around her and pull her near while I assume control of the kiss. I prod her lips until she opens, and my tongue pushes its way into heaven. She doesn’t let me maintain control for long. Her tongue searches for mine and we duel for supremacy.

I groan and press my hardness against her stomach, and she freezes before dropping her hand and wrenching her lips from mine. She’s gasping for breath, and her lips are swollen from my kisses. She’s never been more beautiful.

But her eyes are wide and fearful. “This was a mistake. We shouldn’t…You’re my boss.”

She clears her throat. “I’m sorry if I’ve led you on, but this can never happen again. Forget this ever happened.”

“But…”

I don’t have time to get my words out before she’s throwing the door open and running down the hallway.

Well, shit. Our first kiss did not end the way I hoped it would.
