“What is this hole? And where do I find it?”

She slaps my shoulder. “No. You can’t pretend to be literal Lilac now when you understand what I’m talking about.”

“She’s correct,” Aspen says as she stands next to Ashlyn.

They both study me as if I’m a specimen in a scientific experiment. Except I know for a fact Aspen never did a scientific experiment in her life. She avoided them in high school by pulling the fire alarm.

It was extremely agitating since I was in all of her high school science classes despite being four years her junior. Although I should probably thank her as I learned to perform those experiments with the blare of a fire alarm in the background. It did wonders for my concentration.

Ellery sighs from her place on my sofa. “You might as well tell them why you’re blushing, or we’ll be here all night while they beat it out of you.”

“Beat it out of me?”

“She’s not being literal. Duh.” Ashlyn rolls her eyes.

“I, for one, don’t need to hear what Lilac has to say,” Juniper announces.

“You don’t? Are you feeling okay? Oh wait. Is this some newfangled idea of ‘privacy’ since you’re now engaged to a movie star?” Ashlyn feigns gagging.

“One, we’re not engaged.”

“Yet,” Ellery tags on.

Juniper ignores Ellery’s interruption. “And, two, I don’t need to know because I already do.”

My mouth gapes open and words rush out before I have the chance to think. “How in the world do you know I kissed my boss at work?”

Juniper smiles in triumph, and I realize she tricked me. Damn Beckett. This is all his fault. Usually, my sisters are incapable of tricking me in any manner.

“High five!” Ellery lifts her hand and Juniper smacks it. “Awesome job.”

Juniper bows. “Thank you.”

“I didn’t see this coming,” Aspen mutters.

Ashlyn elbows her. “You didn’t? You’re the chairperson of the committee to match Lilac with Beckett.”

I sincerely hope my baby sister is exaggerating and there is no committee to match me with my boss.

“Yeah, but I thought we’d need months to get to this juncture.”

“It has been months. Beckett took over the CEO position at Clean Mountain Environment a year ago.” Ellery waves her phone at Aspen. “It says as much on their website.”

“This is awesome!” Ashlyn cheers. “We know something before the gossip gals.”

“This is not awesome,” I hiss. “I could lose my job.”

She waves away my concern. “You’ve got it all wrong. Grumpy boss romances go as follows: boss is grumpy, but the subordinate – you in this instance – smashes through their defenses and they end up fooling around and falling in love. Everything works out in the end.”

I glare at her. “You do realize my life is not one of those romance novels you narrate.”

Ashlyn studied drama in college but instead of going to Hollywood to star in films, she decided to become an audiobook narrator. She is now a known narrator for sexy romance novels. Her husband even built her a studio, Bertie’s Recording Studio, in town.

“But it could be,” she sings.

“Are you worried about your job?” Juniper asks before I have a chance to lecture Ashlyn on the difference between fiction and reality.

What an absurd question. Of course, I’m worried. “There is a no fraternization policy at our office.”
