Peace scratches his beard. “Oh yeah. You’re not from here. You can park your car at the lot next to the Inn on Main. There are golf carts you can borrow available there.”

“Thanks.” I guess this means I’m not getting a ticket. I don’t ask him, though. No sense reminding him of why he pulled me over.

“I’ll see you at the party.”

“Wait!” I call before he can walk away. “What party?”

“For Lilac’s sister’s moving-in party.”

Lilac has a sister? She never told me.

“Where’s the party?”

“At Maverick Langston’s house.”

Maverick Langston? As in the movie star, Maverick Langston? He lives in the town of Winter Falls? What else has Lilac been hiding from me?

“I’ll give you a ride,” he says and marches back to his patrol vehicle before I can ask him any further questions.

After we drop my car off at the lot, I hop into the patrol vehicle with Peace. We’re quiet as he drives us to a large colonial house. The street in front is crowded with golf carts and the front yard is littered with bikes. I guess he wasn’t kidding about the no cars policy.

When I open the car door, the sound of laughter and music hits me. It’s a party all right.

“Come on. Everyone’s in back.” He indicates I should follow him as we round the house into the backyard.

Quiet falls when we arrive. Why is everyone quiet all of a sudden? Is someone going to make an announcement? I scan the area and realize everyone’s staring at me. I understand I’m a stranger here, but it’s no reason to stare.

The crowd opens up and there she is. Lilac ‘pain in my ass’ West. The tension in my body slips away as I realize she’s okay. She’s perfectly fine and hasn’t been in the horrific accident I’d imagined.

As I watch, she scowls and stomps her way across the lawn toward me. Even scowling, Lilac West is the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen. Her hair is a light brown color with streaks of blonde running through it. It’s long enough for me to fist in my hand while I plunder her mouth with those pouty pink lips.

Her brown eyes are the color of my favorite whisky. They’re also sharp and don’t miss a thing. The freckles scattered across her nose and cheeks lessen the hardness of her features and make her appear younger than the thirty years I know her to be.

“What are you doing here?” she asks when she reaches me.

“I was about to ask you the same thing.”

“You have no right to ask about my whereabouts when it’s not related to work.”

“When you refused to answer my messages, I assumed you were on a date.” I spit the word date out of my mouth.

A couple of weeks after I arrived at Clean Mountain Environment, I asked Lilac to join me for lunch. She said no without an explanation. I found out the reason on my own when I saw her entering a local hotel with a man. And it wasn’t the last time I saw her at a hotel with a man either.

Because Lilac West is a player, which is a shame since she’s also my ideal woman. Smart, serious about her work, doesn’t take crap from anyone – including me – and gorgeous to top it all off.

“I refused to answer your calls because I am not at your beck and call despite what you may believe.”

I know she’s not at my beck and call but whose beck and call is she at?

“You rushed out of the office in a hurry yesterday. I thought there was a problem.”

She crosses her arms over her chest, and I force my gaze to remain on her eyes. I don’t need to look down to know the movement caused her breasts to press together. The vision has been seared into my brain since the first time I saw it.

“I did not rush out of the office. I completed my tasks for the day and left.”

“You didn’t check with me before leaving.”

Her nostrils flare. “I didn’t realize checking with you was a requirement before leaving for the day.”
