“Over my dead body,” Beckett grumbles before hauling me away once again.

“What is wrong with you?” I hiss at him. “The receptionist will think I’m an indecisive woman.”

“The receptionist doesn’t think you’re an indecisive woman.”

“How do you know?”

He points to the receptionist who’s waving and giving Beckett a thumbs-up.

“Why is he giving you a thumbs-up?”

Beckett shrugs, which is a convenient way to lie without actually speaking words.

“It doesn’t matter. What matters is I won’t allow you to drive all the way to Oakland to stay in a hotel there when you have an important presentation tomorrow morning.”

I bristle. “Are you doubting my capabilities again?” The tingles in my core evaporate as anger replaces excitement.

“Again? What do you…” He cuts himself off. “Never mind. You’ll stay in my room.”

“Do you have two beds?”

“No. There’s one bed.”

“Where will you sleep?”

“I can sleep in bed with you.”

Those tingles flare back to life. I place a hand on my stomach and inhale a deep breath. I know better than to allow the chemistry between us ruin my career.

“Your proposal is unacceptable. I’ll sleep on the floor.”

“You are not sleeping on the floor,” he growls.

I cross my arms over my chest and his gaze dips to my cleavage before he clears his voice and glances away. His display of sexual attraction to me is confirmation I’m correct. We can’t stay in a hotel room together.

“Since I’m not sleeping in a bed with you and you won’t sleep on the floor and you won’t let me sleep on the floor, the only solution is for me to get a hotel room in Oakland.”

“I don’t know why you’re making such a big deal about this. You’ve slept with plenty of men.”

What is he talking about? Why is he abruptly changing the subject? “No, I haven’t.”

“You haven’t?” He crosses his arms over his chest. “It wasn’t you I caught sneaking into a hotel room in Arkville with a man?”

“Arkville? Sneaking into a hotel room? What are you talking about? Have you been spying on me?”

“It’s not spying if it’s not deliberate.”

“While I do not completely agree with your definition of the word spy, it’s immaterial as I haven’t slept with any man in Arkville.”

He bends down slightly until he can meet my gaze. “I saw you.”

“I don’t know what you saw but I don’t sleep with men.”

“I saw you,” he repeats.

I think back on my encounters in Arkville. It’s been a while since I spent any time there as Beckett has been successful in ensuring I’m too busy to escape the office for an hour-long lunch regardless of whether I have a right to one or not. The last time I was there—

Oh wait. He’s not talking about me sleeping with men. He’s talking about me having sex with men. He should have made himself clear.
