Aspen places her hands on my shoulders. “But what if you don’t lose your job? What if you fall in love and live happily ever after?”

“Statistically, the chance of falling in love and living happily ever after is unlikely.”

“Who cares about statistics?”

Not care about statistics? Is Ashlyn crazy? Everyone should care about statistics. “I do.”

Aspen squeezes my shoulders. “If Beckett made love to you, it means he thinks of you as more than a one-night stand.”

“But we agreed. Only one time.”

“Make a new agreement. An agreement to see where the relationship between you two can go.”

“I told you. The relationship can go nowhere. He’s my boss.”

“How do these things work out in those books you narrate?” Aspen asks Ashlyn.

Ashlyn’s nose scrunches. “Lots of drama happens, but it all works out in the end.”

“I don’t do drama.”

“Too bad,” Aspen says, “because you’re in smack dab in the middle of drama now.”

Which is exactly where I didn’t want to be. I don’t do complicated, and I don’t do drama, both of which lead to confusing situations. I prefer to maintain relationships I know the boundaries of. A romantic relationship is not one of those.

“Think about it, Lilac,” Juniper says as she climbs to her feet. “Don’t you want a steady relationship like the ones we have?”

No, I don’t think I do. People don’t understand me. Beckett may think I’m fascinating now, but he’ll grow frustrated with me the same way everyone else has. I can’t risk it. I’d rather not try than fail in the end. I hate failing.
