“What are you doing?”

“Waiting for your instructions.” She widens her eyes and licks her lips.

Crap. I should have known better than to flirt with my personal assistant. I rub a hand down my face as I contemplate how to handle the situation. Honesty’s the best policy as Lilac would say.

“I’m afraid you got the wrong impression.” Because of me being a complete and total idiot.

Her eyelashes flutter. “Wrong impression about what?”

“About our relationship.”

She bends forward and juts out her chest, revealing her cleavage. “Yes?”

“There is no relationship between us except employer and employee.”

Her bottom lip curls. “But I thought…”

“As I said, I’m afraid I gave you the wrong impression.”

The whiney girl disappears, and her eyes sharpen as they narrow on me. “I’m contacting HR and lodging a sexual harassment complaint.”

“That is your right. In the meantime, I’ll arrange for you and Stan’s PA to switch positions.”

“What?” she screeches. “You can’t demote me!”

“I’m not demoting you. Stan is a member of the board the same as I am, and his PA earns the same salary as you.”

“But Stan’s… He’s ….”

I wait. “Yes?” I ask despite knowing exactly what her problem is. Stan is happily married to a man and, therefore, not susceptible to Brandi’s flirting attempts.

Knock! Knock!

“I don’t mean to disturb,” Lilac calls from her place at the doorway, “but we have a meeting scheduled to discuss the contract with Arkville.”

Brandi rolls her eyes. “Of course, you do. All you do is talk about work.”

Lilac is adorably confused. “Because we’re in an office.”

“Whatever. I’ll be at HR.” Brandi stomps off.

Lilac waits until she’s gone before asking, “What’s going on? Why is she meeting with HR?”

“Because I’m an idiot.”

“You’ll have to be more specific.”

I grin. Lilac never fails to amuse me, even when she’s being totally serious as she is now.

“Close the door.”

She frowns. “I don’t think closing the door is a good idea.”

“Close and lock the damn door, Lilac.”

She huffs but closes and locks the door.

I point to a chair. “Sit down.”
