“You would want to marry me?” Her brow wrinkles and I reach forward to soothe it with my finger.

“Of course, I want to marry you. I love you.”

What does she think I’m doing? Playing around with her? Lilac isn’t a woman to play around with. She’s a woman you take home to meet your family. I glance around the room and notice my sisters watching the interaction with interest. Maybe I need to buy Olivia a plane ticket to visit, so she can meet Lilac, too.

“But…”

I raise an eyebrow. “But?”

“But you’re you.” She waves a hand up and down in front of me. “And I’m me.”

“And we fit perfectly together.”

“I like him,” her father declares. He holds out his hand. “I’m Daniel West.”

“Beckett Dempsey.”

His hand squeezes mine to the point of pain. “If you hurt my Lilac, I’ll dig out my shotgun.”

Lilac wrestles our hands apart. “You don’t own a shotgun, Dad. You’re a peace activist, remember?”

“A peace activist can get violent when it comes to protecting his family.”

I wrap an arm around Lilac and draw her near. “Don’t worry, Daniel. I won’t hurt Lilac.”

She melts into me, and I wink down at her. She smiles up at me and I realize I’ll do anything to see her smile up at me this way for the rest of my life. I not only love the woman, she has my heart in her hands. I hope she’s careful with it.
