“I do feel bad, though,” I say quietly, chewing my lip, still adjusting to this new reality. I really didn’t want to make an enemy on the first day.

“You really shouldn’t. I got here around the same time as Katrina. She’s been bullying anyone she deems unworthy of her clique since she got here a month ago.”

I nod at Kali, thinking over her words. I really don’t like people who put others down just to make themselves feel better. However, a part of me can still see there might be a bit more to Katrina than meets the eye.

“She’s also been claiming that she and Adrian have been dating since day one.” She darts her gaze over to him before quickly looking down at her shoes, a blush creeping over her cheeks.

“Don’t believe the rumors.” He smirks, wrapping his arm around me, the garment bag held in the other. “I only have my eye on one woman.” He winks at me, catching my eye before gesturing to the bag.

“Your uniforms.”

I go to reach for the bag but Adrian steps back, holding the bag out of my reach. “First, you should pick out some items. Classes start tomorrow, and the staff won’t be able to bring over all of your clothes from your mortal room before then.”

“I guess I shouldn’t ask how they plan on getting them,” I mumble, crossing my arms.

“Magic, of course.” He winks at me playfully. Placing a warm, firm hand on my lower back, he leads me towards a tableful of undergarments.

“Those would look great on you,” he murmurs close to my ear, eyes focused on a lace burgundy thong. Adrian swiftly jumps back, narrowly avoiding my half-hearted swat aimed at his firm bicep. Chuckling, he backs away, eyeing me as he makes his way to a plush velvet seat, looking suspiciously like the ones he had conjured previously.

Cora rushes back in, a card clutched in her tiny hand. She swiftly moves to the counter, swiping it, before running back out, grabbing a shopping bag on her way. Katrina’s clothes follow behind, flying through the air after her, on her way back over to Katrina. Surprisingly, she is no longer laid on the floor.

She stands, wiping off the dress, as her embarrassment turns to anger once more. Cora stops in front of her holding out the bag as the clothes fly up over her head, folding themselves and landing in the open bag. Cora primly hands Katrina the card and bag, scolding her once more before turning on her heel and heading back inside.

Katrina’s eyes fly past Cora’s retreating form, throwing daggers at me before turning, blonde hair whipping out around her and stalking out of the promenade, her paper shopping bag swinging at her side.

“What was all that?” I mutter to myself under my breath.

“Madame Cora was taking payment for the dress. We all get a weekly allowance since mortal currency is of no use here,” Kali says beside me, making me nearly jump out of my skin. Hand clutching my chest, I spin in her direction. Her cheeks redden and she shuffles from one to the other. She’s changed back into her clothes, and the cobalt blue dress drapes on the hanger at her side.

“You really should get the dress.” I change the subject, giving her a friendly smile. In an attempt to make her feel more at ease.

“I … I think I will. Thank you for suggesting it and for not listening to Katrina.” She looks up at me, her eyes glistening.

“People like that are neither worth your time nor your tears.” I clasp her shoulder, meeting her eyes. She nods, a smile playing on her lips as she wipes the stray tear running down her cheek. She pulls out a piece of paper, quickly jotting something down before handing it to me.

“Here’s my number, you can uhh … text me if you want to meet up before orientation tomorrow.”

I nod, my grin widening as I clasp the small, torn page. Kali’s face brightens, and she waves, making her way over to Cora to purchase the gorgeous dress. Smiling to myself, I continue perusing the clothes, glad that I’ve at least made one new friend in this strange new world.
