She breathes out a long sigh at the end, her eyes dazed, her mind clearly whirring with the influx of information.

“Wow, okay, kind of seeing how you haven’t had time to fill little-old-me in on all of this,” she muses, blinking away the mental fog. I open my mouth to protest, but she raises her hand, cutting off my words.

“Nope, none of that. Just from now on, I’m going to be calling you so often, you won’t have any other choice than to answer my calls.” Her tone rings with a note of finality, and she stubbornly crosses her arms over her chest.

A giggle bubbles up past my lips, and I shake my head, grateful to have such an amazing friend in my life.

“Now, do I need to slap some sense into god boy or what?” She scowls at her phone screen as though imagining Adrian could see her look of contempt somehow.

“No, no.” I chuckle, but the amusement doesn’t reach my eyes, my lips pulling down into a frown at the thought. “We just need to talk, but he needs time still, and I’m more than willing to give him that.” I chew the corner of my lips in thought, running over our conversation from that morning. Letting the momentary warmth I saw in his eyes comfort me, and feel the flicker of hope that it sparked inside my chest stay lit.

“Well, you just say the word and I’ll be there, with a knuckle sandwich in hand,” she warns, winding up her fist at her side. A laugh of genuine amusement bursts past my lips at her awkward movement, and I shake my head. Noting that I need to teach her at least a few of the new self-defense techniques I’ve learned so far.

“Girl, you better not be punching anyone like that, you’ll break your thumb,” I tease, eyeing her thumb tucked tightly into her palm.

“Oh, I know that. I was just testing you, babe. See, you passed with flying colors. You’ll do great tomorrow.” She shakes her hand loose, feigning a nonchalant look and gives me a grateful smile. My answering smile widens at her words.

“Speaking of which, you should go to bed, missy, you have a big day of kicking ass and taking names to do tomorrow.” Her lips tip up in a small smile, but her brows crease in worry. She steps forward, bending to lift her phone off of the desk she propped it up on.

“Ya, I do. Thank you, Nelle,” I say sincerely, wishing I could wrap her into a tight hug right now.

“Anytime girl, you’ll do great tomorrow, and if anything happens, you promise me that you’ll come right here and we’ll ride off into the sunset together … well, most likely jet, but same thing.” She lets out an amused laugh, but it sounds shaky.

“I promise, at the first sign of trouble I’ll be there before you know it.” I give her a tight smile, hoping she can’t see the half-truth in my eyes. I promised both her and my father I would escape if anything goes awry, but I vow that I will fight tooth and nail before it gets to that point.

“I love you, girl,” I say softly, unable to promise anymore, knowing running would be my very last option.

“I love you more.” She blows me an air kiss, which I return, waving before I solemnly disconnect the call.

I lie back in the bed, already dressed in my silk nightgown, and I pull the covers up over me. My hands smooth over the soft, cool sheets to rest on either side of me. I use the balance to ground myself. Closing my eyes, I skim a mental hand over the sea of power within me, and I funnel it into my muscles, feeling my limbs strengthen with its power, just as my father showed me. I practice a few more times, letting the energy settle back into my center before pulling it again.

I relax back into the bed, satisfied with my ability and control. With that, I roll over, snuggling comfortably against the plush mattress and adjusting my head on the fluffy pillow. A tendril of fear twists around my stomach, but I push it down. I will fight fairly, without any of my powers, but if the council interferes, I’ll be prepared. I’ll fight tooth and nail to stay by the guys’ side.
