“I had a dream the night before the first trial. Well, I thought it was a dream until I saw my last opponent. So I guess it was a vision,” she admits nervously, rubbing at her bicep as she refuses to meet my gaze.

“What did you see?” I growl out between gritted teeth, trying to hear the words from her own mouth before I jump to conclusions.

“I saw—him plunging his knife into my stomach.” She shivers, and I grip her hips and pull her closer until her knees are touching my own, not needing to hear anymore, and not wanting her to relive the traumatic vision.

“And you didn’t tell any of us before now?” My chest rumbles as I attempt to keep my voice even and calm, not wanting to upset her any further as her face pales with the memories this conversation has clearly resurfaced.

“I didn’t know what it was at first, I figured it was just a bad dream. Then after I changed the outcome, I wasn’t sure if it was just a one-off since I didn’t know that anyone had the power of prophecy,” she says pointedly, accusation clear in her gaze.

“Fine,” I grumble, my hands sliding to squeeze around her thighs in a comforting gesture. “I guess we both need to work on opening up.”

She smiles up at me as though a weight has been lifted off her chest. Although I wish I’d known, I can’t blame her for being unsure of her powers. Not with how reluctant I am to speak about my own. But that is something we both need to change.

My heart warms as I take in her brightening face, the face of hope, the only thing I see now when I think of the future. I never could picture a future before her, never wanting to imagine the blood, death, and destruction waiting for me around the next turn. Hope replaces that burning rage that had suffocated me for far too long.

I close my eyes, gathering my strength. These powers that have plagued my existence for centuries now may be the only tool able to keep her safe.

“I’ve always used my powers sparingly.” I swallow thickly, the admission causing my chest to tighten. My brothers know of the toll my powers take on me, but I’ve never spoken the words aloud. “I’ve had to set events into motion that cause mass death and destruction. Catastrophic events that lead to good in the long run, but that good is sometimes blurry and not clearly connected. So it’s hard to actually see that my actions are causing positive change.”

She clasps my hand which is still gripping her leg lightly. The comforting gesture makes me scowl. I don’t want any of her pity.

I glance up from where my gaze rests on our joined hands, not realizing my eyes had drifted there. And I meet her sea-green eyes, grateful for the open understanding there, rather than the pitying wince I’d expected.

“I don’t want you to have any of those consequences though, I’ll gladly take all of that burden if it means that you can use the power of destruction to stay safe.”

Her lips part and brows crease, but I don’t let her get out the words of protest. I’ll bring the world crumbling down around us to keep her by my side, and I will bury Titus in the rubble if he ever tries to take her from me again. “Let’s get started.”
