“No,” he huffs out on a breath of amusement. “I can’t hurt you.”

I exhale a ragged breath, some relief flooding me at his answer, yet he hadn’t used the word combust.

“So I won’t combust?”

“Oh I didn’t say that.” He chuckles, trailing a wisp of smoke down my stomach. I suck in a breath in anticipation but it dissipates just as it reaches the top of the bikini bottoms. “I can make you combust—give you an orgasm that shakes you so hard you’ll think you’re coming apart, that the world is crumbling around you—but never harm.”

A shudder runs over my body at his explanation, every inch of my skin ready for him to do exactly that. Just when I think I’m about to beg him to take me right then and there, a funnel of black smoke swirls before me, whipping around like a tornado as his body takes form. I can’t help when my gaze dips down, attempting to see what the shadows had cut off before, but to my dismay he’s wearing orange swim trunks now that brightly contrast against his onyx skin.

My eyes snap up to his, remembering how he caught me the last time. I expect to find amusement glinting in his glowing red eyes, but there’s only hunger as he devours me in turn.

“I can make you feel things you’ve never felt before, little witch. All you have to say is yes,” he growls, his gaze darkening as he greedily takes in every curve.

“Yes.” The word slips from my lips in a needy rush, but I don’t care how desperate I sound, not when my body has been ablaze for him since the moment I first felt his presence.

He chuckles in response, and the sound seems to vibrate through my body and straight to my core.

“I’ve been imagining exactly what I’d do to you for a while now, Aria,” Damon whispers, tendrils of smoke wafting up through the air with each word. A mischievous glint sparkles in his eyes as he takes a step forward. His massive palms wrap around my biceps and he pulls me against his hard, warm chest. I press my breasts against him, needing every inch of my skin touching his, soaking in that warm, sensual power he exudes. “I hope you’re ready.”

He leans down, his lips mere inches from mine and my breath catches in my throat as heady anticipation thrums through me. This is it. He’s almost—

Damon stops abruptly, a scowl forming on his luscious lips as he looks up at the sky. My heart plummets as I watch him, confusion wiping away the thick cloud of lust that fogged over my mind.

“Our time is up,” he huffs out on a breath of frustration. Regret tinges those glowing ruby eyes as he looks back down at me. “Next time, little witch.”

My lips part, a protest poised on the tip of my tongue, but it’s cut off as he lowers his lips to mine in a rush, capturing my mouth in a scorching, all-consuming kiss. All thoughts float away. The only thing my mind or body can focus on is the way Damon’s devouring me, lighting up every nerve ending throughout my body and leaving me feeling nothing but ecstasy.

My eyes close automatically, soaking in every ounce of pleasure Damon coaxes from me as his tongue caresses mine in long, languid strokes. I desperately clutch for him, not wanting him to leave, but my hands meet thin air, the soft cloying tendril of smoke brushing over them in a parting reassuring touch as the delicious pressure of his mouth fades too.

With a start, my eyes pop open, my heart jolting at his sudden absence. I expect to see the beach or the darkness engulfing me once more, but a thin stream of sunlight filters in through the window to my right, illuminating my room at the academy. Pulling in a deep breath, I attempt to calm my racing heart, but it’s no use. Damon’s phantom touch still lingers on my skin, his smoky scent invading my nostrils.

There’s no way in hell that could’ve been a dream when my body still craves his touch. I’m addicted already, and this man could just be a figment of my imagination. Perfect.

Chapter Eight

Aria

Ayawntakesmeby surprise as I stride from the cafeteria, nearly making me stumble over my feet in an attempt to cover my mouth in time. Harper stops with me just outside the door, giving me a curious look as I gather myself. I went to bed early last night, not wanting to dwell on all the questions that buzzed around my mind after what happened with Greyson, but I have a feeling that dream has something to do with the thick exhaustion weighing down on me this morning. I take another long swig of my coffee, nearly inhaling the entire cup in my haste.

“Slow down,” Harper exclaims, while I sputter and cough up the coffee trying to kill me. Damn, I used to think it was my savior and now it’s trying to choke the life out of me, one sip at a time. The betrayal is real.

Harper rushes to my side and claps my back repeatedly, causing pain to radiate through me in addition to the choking.

“Not helping,” I wheeze out, and take a hurried step away from her vicious slaps. Scowling back at her, I tentatively rub at the tender spot on my back, wincing at the answering twinge.

“I get that you’re tired, but maybe don’t try to inhale your coffee,” she quips, a grin tilting her lips. Her mahogany eyes brim with amusement, clearly taking enjoyment in my misery now that she’s sure I’ll pull through.

“Thanks so much for that insightful advice. I’ll be sure to remember that next time you slurp down your pasta too fast,” I retort, and give her a triumphant look. Two can play this game, and I won’t pull any punches. Honesty is the best policy after all, right?

“Fair enough,” Harper grinds out. She stomps past me and nearly makes it to the middle of the main entrance before I catch up to her.

“What has you in a mood?” I ask hesitantly, unsure if I want to open up this can of worms on who knows how many hours of actual sleep. I match her pace as she storms towards the hallway near the front where the classrooms are.

“You should know,” she grumbles, switching back to her earlier frostiness at breakfast. I knew she hit me a little too hard.

“You did that on purpose didn’t you?” I ask incredulously, my lips twitching as I try to hold back a smile. I should be upset, but honestly I can’t really muster the energy to be annoyed over something so small right now.

“Of course not,” she lies, but I see the truth the moment she turns to look at me sheepishly. “Fine I may have slapped you a little harder than necessary back there, but you deserved it after you abandoned me with Carter.”
