Denver gestures for his friends to go ahead of him, and they nod as they pass him, joining the crowd of students still filtering out the door. He glances around making sure everyone is out of earshot before he leans close. His lips brush against my ear, the sensation instantly making my nipples harden into peaks.

“I want you to scratch those nails down my back the next time I fuck you, sunshine,” Denver murmurs in my ear, his words sending the sensual caress of his breath over my ear.

“Get out,” I grind out between gritted teeth, my cheeks heating with desire. A thrill shoots through me at the fact that he said that in such a public place, but if he doesn’t get out of here now I might just run out of this classroom regardless of Professor Pierce wanting to speak with me.

He slowly eases away with a wide grin plastered on his stupid, handsome face. Thankfully, he doesn’t say another word and instead strolls casually to the door, his hands resting in his pockets as he whistles an upbeat tune.

I literally can’t decide if I want to drag him to the bedroom or smack the stupid grin right off his face.

“What was that?” Harper asks cautiously, and I stifle the gasp that nearly slips out in my shock. “I was busy with my own problems so what the hell led up to that?” she asks, and gestures over her shoulder to where Jakob seems to be waiting for her.

“It was nothing I can’t handle,” I sigh in exasperation, hating that I have to keep this from my best friend, especially when the situation seems to be getting even more complicated.

“You should ask to be switched,” Harper whispers. “For both of our sakes.” She grimaces as Jakob strides past her and leans against the door frame, clearly not wanting to leave without her.

I cock a brow in question and her cheeks redden in response.

“Don’t give me that look,” she huffs, looking back at Jakob lingering by the door. “Is it okay if I go? I don’t think he’s going to give me the chance to argue our case. He wants to prove he’s stronger, which isn’t going to happen.” Harper raises her voice for the last part, her eyes narrowing to slits on Jakob.

“I have it covered, just go,” I insist, smiling at her in what I can only hope is a convincing way.

“I don’t have all day,” Jakob calls from the door, tapping his watch in annoyance.

“You’ll wait as long as I tell you to wait,” Harper grumbles under her breath. “I’ll see you later, unless I kill this jerk, then I’ll see you when you come to visit me in jail.”

“I’ll be sure to bring you cigarettes, I hear they’re like currency in there,” I call after her as she angrily stomps towards the door.

His throat bobs before he hurriedly slips out of the classroom after Harper. At least someone has enough sense to be scared of me.

“Well that was interesting,” Landon huffs out on a breath of amusement.

“Welcome to my life,” I sigh, unable to hide the exhaustion clinging to me. I push up from my chair about to walk over to him when he stops me.

“No please, I’ll come to you,” he rushes out and hurriedly stands from his office chair. The legs squeak against the hardwood floor in his haste, and he winces slightly as he strides towards Harper’s seat. He pulls the desk around to face me and awkwardly slides into the seat. “Well this is smaller than I expected.”

“Harper lowered her seat on the first day so no one else would take it,” I explain, attempting to stifle the chuckle that bubbles up at the sight of his close to six-foot-four-frame crammed into the desk meant for someone a full foot shorter than him.

“That makes sense,” he groans as he attempts to readjust his legs, but there’s really no use. “I guess this will do for now.”

A blush spreads across his cheeks, just under the rims of his silver-framed glasses as he looks back up at me. My breath catches in my throat, that strange connection still thrumming between us. It never truly goes away during class, but it’s become easier to ignore it especially when Denver is in the room.

Each of these men entices me with their magnetic pull, just this connection to Landon seems more tangible in a way and much more confusing since I don’t actually know him.

“You wanted to speak to me?” I say hesitantly, internally cringing at how soft my voice has become. I really need to start intimidating people more because I honestly think I might be losing my edge.

“Uh yes,” he exclaims, his eyes widening as though he’d forgotten the reason for our discussion. He pulls a small cleaning cloth from his pocket and takes off the large glasses, wiping their practically clear surface while he clearly collects his thoughts.

The light stubble along his jaw looks a lot more pronounced without his glasses, and it almost looks like he has dark circles lining his tawny brown eyes. Landon slips his glasses back on before I can really be sure, the frames helping to obscure them. He lifts his face back up to meet mine, our eyes locking as I’m mesmerized by the almost wood grain to his irises.

“I wanted to discuss the test, and your partner,” Landon says, snapping my focus back to the conversation.

“The test?” I ask, feigning a confused tone as my heart jackhammers so hard I’m almost sure he must be able to hear its frantic pace.

“Yes I—” he pauses, glancing at the still-open door. “Claudit,” he murmurs, and the thick wooden door closes with a click, shutting out the faint hum of voices just beyond it.

“What—” I start to ask and I lean towards the edge of my seat, readying to get the hell out of here. Regardless of this pull I feel, I don’t know him, and I sure as hell don’t trust him.

“Oh no,” he blurts. His hands raise in a pacifying gesture, but I don’t dare drop my guard yet. “I just don’t want anyone to hear what I’m about to say—uh, no that sounds bad too.”
