“I definitely didn’t,” I retort, hoping to keep him distracted long enough to get past the first few lines of trees. He might be lightning fast with those long tentacles of his, but if I weave through the trees it might just trip him up long enough to get away.

“You did,” he growls, his deep voice reverberating against the trees behind me. I take another step back, hoping to make it past the first row, when my back slams into something hard, nearly knocking the breath out of me. I scramble, frantically feeling behind me for what I crashed into, and the rough bark of a tree scrapes across the pads of my fingers.

I desperately try to fill my lungs and gather my strength to run when the slender tips of his tentacles run over my shoes. Fear freezes me in place as they wrap up around my ankles and twine farther and farther up my legs. The skin is soft, almost delicate, as it gently twirls around my legs, sending tingles shooting over my skin as they keep going higher.

My breaths come in ragged pants as the suckers grip my inner thighs, sending waves of desire crashing over me that are so sudden and so violent that black shadows tinge the edges of my vision. I’m barely clinging on to consciousness, and relief floods me as the shadows slowly recede. I scrabble for purchase on the thick tree trunk behind me as I attempt to keep myself upright.

A voice in the back of my mind reminds me that I’m not some powerless human. I have magic and much more than most, but something screams at me not to use it yet. If that damn voice is my intuition I’m not sure if I should even trust it at this point with all the trouble it’s gotten me into lately, like luring me here in the first place.

“Are you acting scared because you think you should?” he asks in a deep rumble as he shrinks down on his tentacles to match my height. I stare into his dark grey eyes, and they ensnare me in their magnetic force.

“No need to act,” I breathe, barely able to think through the thick fog of lust that’s clouding over my mind at his proximity.

“I can scent your desire,” he growls, the sound vibrating straight down to my bones with how close he is now. I swallow thickly, noticing how pliant my body is in his grasp, how ready and willing I am to give in to him. “Can’t you feel that connection between us?”

I focus on my chest rising and falling to remind myself that this is real, this isn’t a dream or a nightmare, this could be life or death. My brows furrow as I focus on his words at his mention of the thrumming bond tethering me to him. I thought it was my intuition but if so, how can he feel it too?

“You don’t even know,” he sighs in disbelief. He winces slightly as if I’ve just dealt him a physical blow when he’s the one who’s clearly in control right now.

“Know what?” I murmur. Every last shred of the fear I once felt has foolishly fled me now, my sole focus on clearing that pain from his gaze.

“You wouldn’t believe me if I told you.” He looks up towards the sky for a moment before he focuses back on me. “Hell, I barely believe this is happening right now myself.”

I frown back at him in confusion, still unsure what to say. I have no clue what the connection could be between us or why his gaze draws me in, making me feel safe despite my logic screaming at me to run.

“Are you going to kill me?” I ask, needing to know the answer to put the hurricane of conflicting thoughts to rest.

He leans back, his eyes widening as if he hadn’t suspected I’d truly been scared before. “Of course not,” he growls so vehemently I feel his declaration in my soul.

He closes his eyes and takes a deep breath as his tentacles grip my legs tighter.

“Who are you?” The question slips from my lips, and I allow curiosity to take over now that I’m almost sure he isn’t going to kill me.

“A name is a sacred thing. It gives someone power over you.” His gaze slowly lowers to capture mine again. “I’ll only tell you if you tell me yours.”

I swallow thickly, unsure if I should really give him my name after he said that. But again, my mind and my body don’t seem to be on the same wavelength as I whisper, “Aria.”

“Aria,” he almost purrs as he rolls my name over his tongue. The sound makes my legs quake, reminding me of the tentacles he has wrapped tightly around my legs. “I’m Kai.”

“Kai,” I repeat his name just as he’d done for mine, memorizing it. My voice is breathy as it leaves my lips, and his tentacles grip my legs even tighter as though hearing his name has the same effect on him.

I slowly loosen my grip on the tree behind me, resting them at my sides as I debate if I should reach out for him or not. My fingers are begging to explore the bare expanse of his chest to see if it has anywhere near the same effect as his tentacles have on me.

“What’s the connection?” I ask again. Judging by his prior reaction I was clearly wrong. It’s not just my intuition if he can feel it too, or if he thinks I should know what it is.

“I can show you.” His tentacles slide higher up my thighs, so dangerously close to the hem of my skirt. “Do you want to find out what my tentacles can do to you?”

I swallow down the lump that forms in my throat as his tentacles inch even further. The tip of one plays with the edge of my skirt, showing me exactly what he has in mind. Dammit, I seriously don’t even care if this has anything to do with the connection right now. My skin heats as flames of desire flicker to life in my core, urging me to say yes, to accept every ounce of pleasure he’s about to wrench from my body.

“Yes,” I breathe, not caring how my voice sounds at this moment. “Show me.”

As if those words alone snapped an invisible leash that has been holding him back, he surges forward, his lips capturing mine in a searing kiss. I moan against his mouth as the smooth skin caresses my own, devouring me exactly how I’d wished he would. His tentacles inch higher while his hands grasp my wrists and pin them over my head. The kiss is both softer and harder than I’m used to, and the texture of his skin is like silk against mine, yet the raw desire in his movements drives my own need higher with every scorching caress of his lips.

Kai shifts his grip to hold both my wrists with one of his large hands and leans back to look down at me. The bark bites into my skin, but the pressure only sparks my desire higher. I nearly chase after him and fight against his hold until the hunger in his gaze stops me. His grey eyes sweep over my quivering form like he can see straight through my clothes to my heated skin underneath.

“I need to watch you,” Kai groans as the tip of his tentacles rip the seams of my thong. The thin fabric falls to the ground, leaving my pussy bare, wet, and aching for his touch. “Don’t hide your pleasure from me, Aria. It’s mine to take, mine to revel in.”

I pull in a ragged breath and nod, unsure if I can even form any words right now. I honestly have no choice though, because there’s no way I’m walking away now. His eyes lock on mine as one of his tentacles dips between my folds and flicks against my clit. Mind-numbing ecstasy barrels into me with that one touch, and if not for his grip on both my wrists and legs, I’m sure my knees would give out.
