I pause at that, thinking it over as some of the pieces start to fit into place.

“Is that why I was so drawn to the lake today?” I ask, trying to make sense of the sudden calming of my power too. I’d used some at the lake but not nearly enough to make it feel as settled as it does now. “My power has been going haywire lately, and it was pushing me to the lake. I thought it was just my intuition again pushing me where I knew I could use it freely, but ever since I was with Kai, it feels like it’s under control.”

“That makes sense too.” He nods, his analytical mind piecing together the information I’ve given him with what he knows. “Mates affect our magic, even I felt what you described on a much smaller scale the moment I walked into the cafeteria that first night, but it settled as soon as our eyes locked, so I haven’t really looked at it too closely.”

Some of the tension in my chest eases. Hopefully, my power won’t feel like it’s bursting from my skin again because I can’t go through today again.

“So Kai is ...?” Landon asks, trailing off as he waits for me to fill in the blanks. My cheeks heat at the realization I haven’t explained the rest of what happened today. I spare him the details but fill Landon in on the basics.

“He said that I called for him,” I murmur, a crease forming between my brows as I revisit the part of the conversation that had thrown me off. “Is that possible, and how did he get through the magic surrounding the town and the school?”

“It could be that the mate bond called to him because of how unstable your magic was,” Landon says, chewing on his bottom lip as he pauses for a moment to think. “I’m not sure about him getting through the protections, but I’ll do some research. A lot of strange things have been happening around here lately.”

His eyes go distant, like his mind has wandered somewhere else as he thinks over my words. I swallow the question at the tip of my tongue, giving him the time he needs despite my curiosity being piqued by the shred of information he just let slip.

I just learned one life-changing piece of information. My poor brain might need a bit of a break before I bombard it with more truth.

“An arbor, a shadow monster, and a kraken, you really lucked out in the most dangerous mates department didn’t you?” Landon chuckles, shaking his head like he still hasn’t wrapped all this around his brain yet. Well that makes two of us.

“I don’t know much about mates, but I think I should tell you there’s two more men I’m drawn to,” I admit, my stomach sinking at the words that are about to leave my lips.

I haven’t told anyone about Denver, and despite how much the pompous warlock annoys me to no end, there’s something there that can’t be denied. And Greyson ... my heart pangs with the distance I’ve tried to put between us in the past—to forget about the magnetic pull I feel towards him—but it didn’t work. Even now, there’s something undeniable between us, something that I know I won’t be able to avoid forever. I have no idea how anything will work with either of these men—hell even my monster mates are all forbidden—but I can’t keep this secret any longer, not when I have no idea what being mates will lead to, or what he wants from any of this, if anything at all.

“One of them is Denver I’m assuming,” he says, breaking through my thoughts. I blink up at him in confusion, not understanding how he possibly figured it out. “Earlier, the way he acted when he thought you were missing was the same reaction I had. You both looked like you were about to reach out for one another a few times too,” he adds nervously.

“Of course,” I sigh, my shoulders slumping half in defeat and half in relief at his reaction.

“The moment that I figured out who you are exactly I knew that I wouldn’t be the only partner in your life.” He smiles. His tone is a mix of acceptance strengthened with resolve. “I came to terms fairly early that if I want this to go anywhere I’d have to accept that I’ll need to share you.”

“And where is this going exactly?” I ask hesitantly.

“Well, it’s difficult because I’m your professor and you’re a future Coven Leader, but I’d like to get to know you more.” He leans closer as though drawn in by instinct. “I don’t want to do anything that will jeopardize either of our positions, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t tempted.”

“Tempted,” I repeat in a breathy tone, his words barely registering as I focus on his lips.

“Yes, Aria,” he whispers, his breath caressing against my cheek as one of us leans in, my mind too addled with thoughts of him to be able to distinguish who it is. “You’re the single most tempting woman I’ll ever meet in this lifetime or the next. And I’d say the same thing even without the mate bond.”

A soft groan slips from my lips at that and my core clenches with need. I want to beg him to take that final step to give me the friction I crave.

“Are you going to untie me?” I ask, hoping he’ll realize how close he is. The vines still bite into my flesh leaving just a thin piece of fabric separating him from my aching center.

“Do you want me to?” he murmurs. Almost all of the green has faded from his eyes now as he scans my face with anticipation. He shifts his hips closer, letting me feel his arousal as his hard cock presses against me.

“No.” I rock my hips and grind myself on his throbbing length.

Landon mutters a curse under his breath and mimics my motion, rubbing himself against my soaked thong. My hands itch to pull him closer, to rip off his pants and let him sink his thick cock into me. I buck against him again, keeping a slow rhythm as our lips inch closer. His breath skates across my lips, his mouth seconds from descending on mine when a sharp rap splits through the silence, sending the moment crashing to a screeching halt.

“Fuck.” Landon curses, springing back as he clearly remembers we hadn’t locked the door.

My heart jolts as the doorknob turns, and I unleash my power, using it to block the door as Landon’s vines hurriedly unfurl from around my legs. Sparks of gold ignite against the wood doorframe, keeping it firmly in place despite the attempts from the person on the other side.

Landon’s vines sink back into his palms, and he sighs a breath of relief as he shakes them out. That was far too close. If anyone saw that he would end up in much more trouble than either of us would if we were caught kissing. I scan him over and use my power to fix both of our hair and clothes, making sure there isn’t a sign of more than a meeting happening between the two of us before I hop off the desk.

“Professor Pierce,” Denver growls, knocking on the door again. The anger in his tone nearly stops me in my tracks, solidifying the thoughts I just admitted to Landon. I rush towards the door and grasp the handle, letting my magic retreat at the same time as I tug the door open.

Denver hurtles through the threshold, breaking the silencing spell as he nearly flies past me. I reach out, about to catch him or fall with him, but in the next second Landon is there catching Denver around the shoulders before he faceplants on the hardwood floor.

Denver hurriedly rights himself, pushing out of Landon’s grasp with a huff. I raise a brow and watch him with a look of amusement as he brushes himself off and turns an accusing glare on me like it’s somehow my fault he nearly fell. Well, I guess it was, but how was I supposed to know he was going to come flying through the door?
