“That’s different,” the red one hisses, wheezing as he attempts to pull in a breath.

A shadow hovers over me and I snap my eyes closed and silently hope they didn’t catch me. I keep my breathing even, mimicking the soft rise and fall of sleep and the footsteps fade away in the other direction.

That was close.

I keep my eyes closed, able to distinguish the three monsters now by their voices. I’m barely holding onto consciousness right now and taking on three—possibly four—monsters in my weakened state is not going to happen. It sounds like there are other students here too, but who knows if they’re in any shape to fight our way out of here either.

“We need to get that witch,” the red one gasps, as the grey one still strangles him. My heart jolts as adrenaline rushes through me. I’m almost about to use what little strength I have now to kill him before he touches her when a voice makes me pause.

“You won’t touch her,” the grey one growls. Does he know her? How do they know that Aria was trying to help them?

“Kai, you should go cool off,” the smoke figure says, his voice barely audible as I almost lose my grip on the world as relief floods me. If these two are on Aria’s side, at least they’ll help keep her safe if I don’t make it out of here.

My mind catches on that thought, wishing we had more time. We grew up together, but that was only as friends. We finally had the chance to have something more and it was snatched away from us before I could even truly call her mine and shout it from the rooftops.

“Fine,” ‘Kai’ growls. He must loosen his hold on the red one’s neck as a chorus of coughs and gasps echo in the ... cave? I hadn’t been able to make out all the details, but the walls looked like rough stone.

“Fuck you,” the red one chokes out before footsteps fade away into the distance.

“She isn’t safe,” Kai grumbles as stone crashes, the force of the impact echoing through the room or cave—wherever we are.

“I’ll try to meet her in the dream realm, but it doesn’t always work.” The shadowed one sighs.

“We’ll need to find a way to tell her about the danger she’s in now,” Kai grumbles as rocks crash to the ground again.

“I’ll try to get to Aria tonight,” the shadowed one promises. “But you have to keep a hold of your temper. We can’t burn our bridges here yet, not with the students being held hostage.” Both of their footsteps fade and their voices ebb into silence.

Aria.I repeat her name in my mind like a prayer—the one thought I hold on to, to get me through this nightmare.

I’m going to find my way back to her, no matter what. We deserve the happiness that was just at the tips of our fingers, and call me selfish but I want that with her. I’ll fight my way out of here even if it’s just me against a horde of monsters. Aria is the light at the end of the tunnel, the person I knew that night on the cliff that I would risk everything for, so I’ll risk it all to get back to her.

Resolve strengthens me as exhaustion sets in, and I grit my teeth against the dull ache in my head. I let go of my tenuous hold on my awareness and drift back into the dark void of dreamless sleep.
