“It’s magic,” Lavinia said, her eyes still closed. “Powerful magic. Ancient magic.” Her eyes shot open. “Something is sleeping down there.”

“What?” Shane shifted his shocked gaze from her back to the gap. “What do you mean something?”

“I don’t know.” She lowered her hands. “A creature of sorts? But it doesn’t feel like a good thing.”

“Your father never told you about something sleeping underneath the town?” Killian asked.

Shane shook his head. “I think I would remember if he had.”

“Can’t you use your magic to find out?” Lucille asked Lavinia.

Lavinia shook her head. “Whatever it is, it doesn’t want to be found.”

I frowned. Shane put the crystals back and instead of having the barrier come up again, a crack appeared in the middle of the main square, and apparently a creature was sleeping deep in the earth.

Just a regular day in the Nightshade pack. Because why would anything go smoothly?

“What do we do now?” Roman asked.

Shane sighed. “Right now, everyone should go on about their days. Forget the crack. I’ll figure out what’s going on.”

Roman seemed ready to argue, but nodded. He was the first to walk away.

Lucille looked at Shane. “Why don’t you take a break? I can make breakfast for you.”

I felt an urge to jump over the crack and push her away from Shane. Instead, I walked away too. After all, I was still the omega and shouldn’t be seen hanging around the alpha while he made important decisions.

Shane dismissed her, but I didn’t stick around to see or hear if she pushed it. I joined Rue and Minsi at the edge of the square.

“Is everything okay?” Rue asked, her gaze on the group behind me.

“I don’t know,” I told her. There was no reason to lie to her. “But Shane told us to do our normal stuff while he works on this. That means we move our asses and begin our day.”

I took the brown bag from Rue, not sure when I would be able to give it to Shane, if it at all. I steered Minsi toward the library, and Rue left, saying she would be back soon.

Inside the library, Minsi skipped to the rug in the center, where she settled with a book. With a sigh, I went to the front desk and started looking over my giant to-do list. But the words didn’t register. I was dying to spy out the window or call Shane. Besides wanting to know what he would do about the crystals and the crack, I wanted to see him. To touch him, to hug him. I hadn’t seen him in a little over thirty-six hours and that felt like an eternity.

He had texted me all the time, and last night we had even talked on the phone after his siblings went to bed. He had told me where and how they had found Dixon, about the fight, and finding the crystals in a box.

I gave in to my curiosity and headed to the nearest window.

I took two steps and the front door opened. Shane marched in. I froze, watching as he walked toward me, his brows knotted, his body radiating tension.

He crashed into me, wound his arms around my waist, and pressed his lips to mine. Instantly, I forgot where we were and that someone could walk in on us. I melted into him and kissed him back.

Someone cleared his throat.

I jumped back, but Shane kept his arm locked around my waist, not letting me get too far.

I stared at Tyren.

“It’s okay,” Shane said. “He knows.”

I blinked. “You do?”

Tyren showed me a knowing smile. “I do.”

“And you’re okay with it?”
