At the same time I wished I could take it back, so we could go back to being the awesome couple we were, I knew I couldn’t. We shouldn’t. It had come out for a reason.

I had to believe Shane and I would make it through this. After all, he was my mate. Fate wouldn’t tie me together to a male who hated my guts, would it?

Could fate be this cruel?

Yes. Yes, it could.

Just like it had been all along. By the moon, I didn’t know what was more shocking: my father being a demon, or the fact that Franc had known and he had protected my mother and me.

All of this info, along with the dragon bit … it was too much for anyone.

As much as I wanted to disappear, I couldn’t stay here forever.

I took the elevator to the top floor.

The doors opened and Lily faced me with a wide smile. “There you are. Welcome back.”

I stepped out of the elevator and started down the corridor with her. “Where’s Shane?”

“I took him to your bedroom,” she said.

“Our bedroom?”

“It’s getting late. King Tanner offered for you both to sleep here tonight before going home. Would you like me to take you there now?”

I frowned. “Not yet. Is there any place I could go for a walk? Like any area of the palace where I can roam around?”

“Of course.” Lily gestured for me to follow her.

She took me through the empty throne room—I asked about King Tanner and Princess Jasmin and she told me they had another meeting somewhere else—down the same hallway we had first come through, but she turned a right before the foyer, and into a wider hallway.

Then she stopped. “You can explore this area. There are plenty of rooms here: drawing room, music room, library, etc. And if you keep following the hallway, you’ll find a sunroom that opens to a beautiful night garden. Is this enough?”

“It’s perfect.” Maybe I could bury myself inside the library and never come out.

“If you need anything, just come this way. There will always be someone right here,” she said. I wanted to tell her I didn’t need anything, but I thought this was like living and visiting a palace, especially theunderworld palace. “Have fun.”

“Thanks,” I muttered as I turned and began walking, my steps slow and unsure.

I checked the doors and soon found the library.

I gasped as I walked in, sure I had stepped into the dark version ofBeauty and the Beast. The library was huge, the ceiling so high that I could barely see it, the shelves lining the walls just as tall, with endless balconies, winding stairs, and ladders. Leather couches and thick rugs covered the floor. Incredibly tall windows covered one of the walls, showing off the black and red landscape outside.

Pushing all my sad and terrible feelings aside, I disappeared between two bookshelves.

Libraries were my happy place, and nothing would ruin that for me.

SHANE

I pacedthe open space in front of the large bed, my anger giving place to worry.

Where was Raika?

Lily had brought me to this suite—large, dark, and ostentatious, with heavy furniture and a view of the lava lake below—over two hours ago.

One hour ago, Tanner had sent an invitation for dinner, which I politely declined. Even so, a half-demon brought a cart with our dinner.
