Page 56 of The Night Burning

We made chocolate frosting for the carrot cake and ate it as dessert. Everyone had second helpings.

Afterward, Shane helped me clean up while Minsi read a book in the living room, and Tyren went to his bedroom to play video games, no doubt. The way we moved in the kitchen, how we worked together to rinse the dishes, load the dishwasher, clean the counters, was like we had been doing it together for ages.

It was so easy to forget all the problems we faced, but it was also the break we needed. We couldn’t just go, go, go and never rest, never take a breather. We needed moments where we were just a girl and a boy in love, spending time together.

Enjoying each other.

Later, I put Minsi in bed, stuck my head inside Tyren’s bedroom to bid him goodnight—he just waved at me, his attention on his monitor—and headed to the front door.

Shane slipped his hands in his sweatpants’ pockets and stared at me. “You know you don’t have to go. They both know about us. They approve and want you here.”

And I was grateful for that. But that wasn’t all. “You know I can’t stay. This is already too risky. If someone were to talk to you, they would see me here. If I spent the night and someone finds out, then it'll add to our list of problems.” I gestured to the door. “Are you walking me out, or should I leave on my own?”

Looking like a puppy in the rain, Shane dragged his feet to the door. He opened it for me and stood under the doorjamb, blocking my way. “You know what? I don’t think I’ll let you go.”

I chuckled. He was too cute for his own good. I walked to him, placed my hands on his hard chest, and pushed him back. Shane took two steps back onto the front porch, but placed his hands over mine, locking them in place. I tried pulling them back, but he wouldn’t let them go.

“Why, you …” I rose on tiptoes, intent on biting his chin, but he lowered his head and pressed his lips to mine. In a swift movement, Shane spun us around, pressed my back against the wall, and his body against mine.

I gasped against his mouth, and he took advantage of it to deepen the kiss.

All conscious thought fled my mind.

Shane adjusted himself, molding more of his body around mine, and I felt his hard-on pressing against my belly.

By the moon, I wanted him. I really wanted him, and I had half a mind to tell him to rip my clothes off and have me right here.

Shane’s hands slid down from my waist to around my ass. He pulled me up and his length rubbed right where I needed him. These damn clothes … they needed to be gone!

His mouth drew a fiery line across my cheek and he whispered, “One day soon, we’ll do it against the wall.”

I gasped, delirious with the possibility.

My place. He could come to my place with me. He could be careful and leave after and be back here without anyone seeing. Yes, my place. We would go to my house. Right now, before I combusted here. “Let’s—”

Shane stiffened.

I was about to ask what happened when I heard it too.

Footsteps.

I snapped my head toward the source and inhaled sharply.

Lucille halted in the middle of the driveway, coming toward Shane’s house. She stared at us with her jaw slackened as if we were two aliens.

“Shit,” Shane muttered. He turned toward her. “Lucille—”

She whirled on her heels and took off.

My gut clenched. “Oh, no.”

Shane ran a hand over his hair. “Shit,” he repeated.

“I should go after her,” I said, turning toward the entrance. “I need to talk to her before she tells anyone else.”

Shane wrapped his hand around my wrist and pulled me back. “Wait. She won’t tell anyone.”

I stared at him. “Are you sure?”
