“Mainly, your curse.”

“Mainly, my curse. And then, I’ll tell everyone about us.” His hands closed around my waist and held me tight against him while he shifted his waist, rubbing my hips to his. I gasped. “Because, damn it, I want you like this all the fucking time.”

One of his hands clasped the nape of my neck as he pulled me to him. His mouth claimed mine and I swallowed a moan as I opened up to him and kissed him back. His lips were warm and soft, and his taste was of chamomile and vanilla, mixed with the mint of his toothpaste. His scent wrapped around me, that warm woody aroma I couldn’t resist.

Good thing I had brains too, because I remembered we were in his house with his siblings, and I wouldn’t be doing anything while we could get caught.

It was a herculean effort to break the kiss, push away from Shane, and take two steps back. “Don’t,” I whispered, not trusting my voice. By the moon, I wanted to have sex with him, but not like this. “Not when your brother can walk in on us.”

“He wouldn’t come downstairs,” Shane said. A small, knowing smile curved his lips. “He would have heard us from his room and stayed in there, probably with some music to muffle everything.”

“Oh, by the moon.” I pressed my hands to my flaming cheeks.

Chuckling, Shane rose and walked to me. He grabbed my wrists, pulling my hands down and my arms around his waist. He leaned into me. “I’m teasing you.”

“I know and I hate I can’t stop myself from falling for it.” I rose on tiptoes and pressed my lips to his. “I hate you.”

“No, you don’t.” Shane pushed me against the kitchen counter and kissed me again, deeper this time, harder, more insistent. A warmth like no other traveled down my body and lodged low in my belly.

Moon, this was just too good.

Shane’s hands slid down around my hips, to the dress’s hem. His fingers grazed against the skin of my thighs and I gasped against his mouth.

The click of a door closing came from upstairs, and Shane and I stilled. We waited for a few seconds, but when no one presented themselves, I decided it was enough. That could have only been Tyren, trying not to hear us.

Though we hadn’t told him the truth, Tyren knew about us. At least that was what I assumed with the way he treated me, or looked at us, as if he was in on a secret. Still, I didn’t want to scar him for life by listening to his brother and me while we … yeah.

I pushed hard against Shane so he would release me and walked to the other side of the kitchen. “Stay there,” I told him, my voice low.

He crossed his arms, his lips curled up. “Yes, ma’am.”

I shook my head. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Wait.” He ran a hand through his hair. “Tomorrow evening, let’s go for a run. Just you and me. I’ll talk to Rue, she can stay with Minsi and Tyren. And I can talk to Killian and Lavinia too. They will cover for us.”

My cheeks flamed with the prospect of spending the evening with Shane running with our wolves. “Sure. I would like that.”

“I’ll text you the details later.”

I nodded, and before I lost my cool and changed my mind, I turned and left the house.

SHANE

I always hatedwhen Raika walked away from me, even if I agreed with her reasoning. After she left, I went back to bed—alone and with a massive hard-on—and tried to rest a little. In the end, this ordeal with Minsi had lasted almost two hours … two precious hours of sleep I really needed.

Since getting out of the prison after the full moon, I worked with everyone nonstop. There was so damn much to do around here. Most nights, I had only four or five hours of sleep. That might be enough for some people, but it definitely wasn’t for me. The lack of sleep was building up. I felt grumpy and irritated, and sometimes about ridiculous things.

Next morning, my day started with a lengthy surveillance of the pack lands’ borders. I met Killian outside the house he and Lavinia were staying in, and together, we ran along the former boundary—me in wolf form and he with his vampire speed.

Last night, when Zin informed us the Whitecrest wolves had been around, I'd gone out ready for a fight. It didn’t come to that, but I had seen the last three wolves surveying the area as they ran away, back to their pack. That made me uneasy.

What the hell did they want? What had they planned with Conri? What had Conri promised them? I hoped it wasn’t something like “you can have a part of their lands if you deliver me the alpha’s head” because my pack wasn’t ready for a new battle. The barrier had spoiled us, made us dependent on it. Without it and with our numbers so low, anyone could attack us and we wouldn’t be able to do shit.

To help better our odds, the next thing on my to-do list was to oversee a training session with our soldiers, and to take stock of who wanted to join our army.

Most of the male wolves were waiting for me in the biggest clearing in the pack lands—Dom, Vallin, Roman, Serge and his friends. Jay had tried joining the day before, but I had told him he was our only healer. He needed to save the injured wolves and leave the fighting to us. He seemed relieved.
