Grinning like a fool, he walked toward me. Or rather, he traipsed. He tripped over his feet and laughed. Oh, shit, the man was drunk again.

“I’m here for payback, bitch,” he said, his words slurred.

“Payback? What did I ever do to you?”

“You existed! The scum of the world. You got Lonan killed. You asked Conri to keep us enslaved.” He narrowed his eyes. “Do you think I don’t know you were in league with him? You always hated us. You were jealous of our status, of our power, so when the opportunity presented itself, you took it. You joined Conri and mistreated us.”

I gaped at him. “You’re delusional.”

Serge stalked toward me. “All the misfortune falling on us now? It’s all because of you. The moon knows that and once I kill you, everything will right itself.”

I rounded the table, keeping it between us. “Serge, I don’t want any trouble with you. Just walk away.”

“No, no. Don’t you see it? I have to kill you. Only then will all the bad karma around our pack end.”

I shook my head. “That’s ridiculous.”

“Time to die, bitch.” Serge lunged at me. He jumped over the table, surprisingly nimble for a man who looked a lot younger than he was.

I wiped the shock from my face and ran from him.

But I didn’t get far. Serge’s hand closed around a bunch of my hair and he yanked my head back. I yelped and lost my balance. Serge pushed me to the ground and I hit my head hard, my vision blurring.

He straddled me, his hands on my neck. “I almost shifted into my wolf for this, but I want you to see the joy on my face while I kill you.”

I jerked under his grip and once again I was surprised by his strength. I punched his arms, I tried moving my hips to push him away, but he didn’t budge.

Black spots clouded my sight. I would faint, and then there was no stopping him. Serge would kill me. That realization filled me with despair.

Darkfire awoke inside of me, and for the first time, I welcomed it. I held on to it with both hands and pulled. The darkfire filled my veins. With a groan that turned into a scream, I shifted one of my arms and swiped at Serge’s face.

His head snapped to the side and he lost his balance. I rolled from under him and stood up. Serge pressed a hand to his face and rose to his feet. When he pulled his hand away, there was blood on his palm.

And two nasty scratches across his cheek.

“I’ll kill you,” he snarled. He grabbed the heavy books from the table and threw them me, one after the other. I blocked them with my arms, but one hit me in my eyebrow, and in a few seconds, a trickle of blood covered my left eye.

Serge rammed into me, pushing me back into a tall shelf. But I was brimming with darkfire. Shadows covered my arms and I pushed him away. Serge flew back, hit another shelf and slid to the floor, several books falling over him.

Blood rushing in my ears, I stalked to him. If he wouldn’t leave me alone, then I had to end this. And there was only one way to do that.

I raised my shifted arm, intent on clawing his heart out.

“Raika!”

I snapped to attention and glanced toward the voice. Shane stood by the door, his eyes wide, his posture coiled. I gasped, as if waking from a dream, and the darkfire faded to background noise.

Serge pushed to his feet and snarled at me.

Shadows wrapped around Shane and his eyes turned red. Oh no. He rushed Serge, but I stepped in his path. “Shane, no.” He bared his teeth at me. “Shane, don’t let it win. You can control it.”

Serge laughed. “Are you really going to listen to that whore?”

Faster than I could react, Shane sidestepped me and punched Serge. Holding his nose, the old wolf fell on his ass.

Shane took a deep breath. His eyes returned to normal and the shadows were nowhere to be seen. “I warned you and now you give me no choice. Serge, you’re banished. You’ve got one hour to pack and leave. I don’t care where you go, justleave!”

Serge stood, his nose bleeding. “I’m not going—”
