Evelyn rolled her shoulders, closed her eyes, and extended her hands out over the trench A few seconds later, the crystals flickered and the herb bundles smoked. She muttered under her breath, words I couldn’t understand. Her brows knotted and sweat gathered on her forehead. She grunted and splayed her fingers.

The crystals shone brightly nonstop, and the herb bunches caught fire.

Evelyn opened her eyes—they glowed green!

“I feel it,” she whispered, her voice rough, almost foreign. “The dragon. He’s sleeping, but he can feel he’s in the pre-awake phase. He wants out.” She gasped. “His power … it’s amazing.”

Her hand glowed the same green as her eyes.

Lavinia and Almae placed their hands on Evelyn’s shoulders and closed their eyes. Were they lending their magic to Evelyn? Whatever it was, they were helping her.

Evelyn gasped. “I’m doing it. I’m redirecting his magic.” She gritted her teeth. “Be ready!”

A green light shone from underneath the crystal. I knelt beside it, ready to grab it. Even if it shocked me again, this time I wasn’t going to let go.

The crystal hummed and trembled. “Evelyn?”

“I’m trying,” she said, her voice strained. “Oh, the spirits, no!”

Green flashed from the vaults, from the gap. The crystal trembled again and melted into a goo of black. “No!” I cried, reaching for it. I touched the goo before it sank into the earth and hissed as it burned my fingertips.

I stared at the vault. The crystal was gone.

Was it a good or a bad thing?

“Evelyn!” someone yelled.

I turned and saw Evelyn faint, Lavinia and Almae holding her limp body. Ash ran to them and caught Evelyn in his arms. I stared from them back to the vault.

What had happened?

I shook my head. A person’s life was more important than the crystals. I ran to them and joined Lavinia and Almae, who hovered over them. Raika, Killian, Tyren, Dom, and Vallin came closer too.

Ash knelt on the ground with Evelyn in his arms. He touched her face. “Evie? Talk to me.”

Evelyn’s eyes fluttered open. “I’m okay … just tired.”

“The spell took too much of your energy.” There was a reprimand in Ash’s voice.

I bit my lip, holding the questions inside. But Evelyn knew. She propped her head on Ash’s shoulder and looked at me. “I couldn’t do it. The dragon was fighting it. He didn’t want me taking more of his magic. He was the one who sent that incredible burst. It fried our connection.”

“And it melted the crystal,” I said.

Evelyn’s eyes rounded. “What?”

Ash nodded. “The crystal became a black liquid. It was absorbed by the earth.”

“Oh no.” Evelyn tried sitting up. “I’m so sorry.”

I was pissed, but … “It’s not your fault.”

Raika gasped. “What if this messes up the land more?”

“On it,” Killian said. He dashed away with his vampire speed.

I frowned. “What do you think happened?”

“I’m hoping that the dragon’s magic obliterated the crystals,” Evelyn said, her voice still weak. “If that happened, then the poison is gone and the dragon will awake fully and break through the ground. If not—”
