“Keep giving them Lavinia’s potion. And if Lavinia comes up with something else to give them, trust her.”

“Y-yes.” Jay frowned. “But you’re coming back, right?”

I stared at my sister for another moment. Then I pushed to my feet and placed a hand on Jay’s shoulder. “I’ll do my best.” He nodded and shrank into himself. “Take care of them,” I told him. “And be safe.”

I walked out of the bedroom and headed for my own. I was about to text Killian and let him know my plan when he stepped in front of me and I almost bumped into him.

“Damn, vampire,” I muttered. My nerves were piling up. Here was one more see-you-soon that might have a more finite ending to it. “I was about to text you.”

He frowned. “What happened?”

I told him about the time change and what I wanted him to do. His expression grew dark as I spoke. “Hopefully, I’ll be back before you.”

“I don’t like this,” he said. “Why did he change the time?”

“Does it matter?”

“I also don’t like that I can’t come with you.”

“Rules are rules. Only wolves, preferably betas, as witnesses. Besides, I would rather you stay with Raika. The worst that could happen is people not answering their doors, since it’s late, or shutting the door in her face, but still … I’ll feel better knowing you’re with her.”

Killian nodded. He grasped my forearm. “Be careful, and kill the damn bastard.”

I chuckled, though there was no humor in it. “Take care, my friend.”

Killian nodded again. He zipped out of view. I was really tired of goodbyes and there was one more, the most painful of all, for me to go through.

I halted in front of my bedroom door. I knocked, and three seconds later, Raika opened the door.

“Hey.” She stepped back and let me in. “I just got back from Tyren’s room. He’s going to be moody for days.”

I walked in and closed the door behind me.

Raika grabbed one of the bags from the desk and opened it. “I brought one of Minsi’s bags to the room. I thought I could help her change into something clean once she feels better.”

“Raika.”

“Because she’ll feel better soon, right? We’re out of the pack lands now, away from the crystals and the poison. She and the others will be good in no time.”

“Raika.”

She picked up a pink shirt from the bag. “I think she’ll like this one. You know what we could do once she’s better? Take her shopping. In a human town. I think she’ll love that.”

I stepped right into her space and held her hands in mine. “Raika,” I whispered. She pressed her lips together, her eyes scanning everything in the room but me. “Hey.” I put a finger under her chin and lifted. Finally her eyes met mine, the blue in them radiating because of the unshed tears. “The challenge is at midnight.”

“W-what?” She stepped back. “No, that’s too soon.”

I held her hands tighter and pulled her back to me. “Listen to me. I promise you, I’ll do my best to win. For you, for Tyren, for Minsi, and for the rest of the pack. I don’t want to lose any of you again and I won’t let you lose me either. We’re a family and we’ll be together. I know things are a mess right now, but together, we’ll figure out a way to make everything right again.”

A tear rolled down her cheek. “I don’t want you to go.”

“You know I have to. I can’t deny a challenge.”

“I know,” she whispered.

“Since I know you won’t be able to sleep, I have a job for you. While I’m gone, please go back into town and convince the ones who stayed behind to leave with you.”

She scoffed. “After the fiasco in the square, I doubt they will listen to me.”
