I went with him, letting him pull me along, since he was faster than me. Still, the heat of the fire touching down warmed my back. I halted at a safe distance, slipped my hand free from Roman’s, and glanced over my shoulder and gasped. From here, I couldn’t tell exactly, but it looked like the fire now consumed most of the square and a couple of the streets around it. The town hall and the infirmary were also on fire.

My heart sank.

Poison wasn’t enough. Now fire was destroying our town. If we had harbored any hopes of someday returning to this place, they were now gone.

The dragon went up again, but now I was sure he would come back and finish us off. Or at least try to.

“We have to leave,” I told Roman. I looked for my friends, but couldn’t see them from here. The fire had separated us.

I hoped they had the same idea as me; it was time to go.

I turned and ran down one of the side streets, intent on disappearing into the forest. I would take the long way back and come check on my friends.

But as soon as I reached the side street, I halted.

Paimon stood a handful of feet from me, a half smile on his lips. “Where do you think you’re going, my child?”

SHANE

Dom drove as fastas the truck could go back to the Nightshade pack lands. On the way, I called Raika, I called Killian, but neither of them answered. I hoped it was because of the time. It was past midnight and their phones were probably set to do-not-disturb.

That had to be it.

We crossed the border where once the barrier was, and while we drove by a small hill that broke through the trees, we could see it.

“Is that …” I gaped.

“The dragon,” Dom whispered.

A huge mass of black against the night sky, the dragon dove, opened his mouth, and blew fire over the town.

A lead ball sank into my stomach. “Faster!”

“I’m trying!”

The truck shook as the road zoomed under us. I glanced back at the bed, and felt terrible. Vallin rolled side to side like a sack of potatoes. Once this was over, I would honor him and give him a great ceremony.

“By the moon,” Dom whispered once we entered the town proper via Main Street. From here, it looked like a sea of fire had washed over the square and surrounding buildings.

My muscles coiled.

Dom stopped the truck beside the SUV in the middle of the road, and I opened the door and jumped out, shifting midair. I ran in my wolf form toward the fire.

Raika?I called through the mind link. She didn’t answer and despair took over.Anyone else?

I see Evelyn and Almae up ahead, Dom said in my mind. He was running a few feet behind me.

Evelyn and Almae ducked behind a wall at the edge of the street, firing bolts of magic at Whitecrest wolves who ran from the fire toward them.

“Don’t hurt the dragon!” Evelyn cried.

A Whitecrest wolf broke through and jumped at them. Ash appeared from the side, brandishing his sword. He cut down the wolf, and when he saw Dom and me, he pointed the sword to us.

“That’s Shane,” Evelyn warned.

Ash lowered the sword. “Right.”
