I pushed the rest of the fries away, turning to the side to see Ariella and the entrance better. Curses and rage bubbled in my chest, traveled up to my throat, burning like the freaking sun, but I swallowed them down. I was here on a mission, and I wouldn’t let anyone or anything distract me.

“Doreen, drop it,” Thierry said again.

“No, listen—“

She shut up when the front doors opened and a man entered the bar. I turned back to the table and held on my warm beer, as if I was interested in the two people sitting across from me, who were now engaged in small talk.

From the corner of my eye, I followed as the man glanced side to side, and dragged his feet to Ariella. He was short for a male, but with broad shoulders, clad in a heavy black jacket and dark pants. He pulled the hood down as he sat across from Ariella, revealing a buzz cut and matching stubble all over his face. He had a nasty scar on his cheek and down his neck, giving him a badass and dangerous air.

I focused my hearing.

“What do you want?” the demon barked.

“Nice to see you too, Soghen.” Ariella gestured for the waitress. The woman didn’t seem happy to have more customers as she made her way to their table and asked what they wanted. “My friend here wants to order something.”

He glared at Ariella, but he then said, “A burger and a beer.”

“And you?” the waitress asked.

Ariella pointed to her untouched wineglass. “I’m good for now. Thanks.”

The waitress left.

“What is your game?” Soghen asked.

“No games. It’s simple, actually. I want an answer to a question, and you will provide it to me.”

He crossed his arms. “What if I don’t?”

“Remember last time we met? I kicked your ass. Do you want to repeat that?”

“You said this would be worth my time,” he mumbled.

Ariella grabbed something from her back pocket and placed it on the table. A thick white envelope.

The demon’s eyes widened, and he snatched the envelope and hid it inside his jacket. He peeked inside and his eyes rounded some more. “What could you possibly want?”

“Where can I find Paimon?”

He cursed and stood. “No.”

“Just answer the question.”

Soghen shook his head and turned to walk away. I got up from my seat and put myself between him and the doorway.

“Shit,” he muttered.

I shifted my hands into claws and let him see them. “Answer her question, or I’ll be the one kicking your ass.”

Cursing, he feinted to the left, but went to the right … right into Doreen and Thierry. The demon was surrounded.

“You’ve got to be kidding me.” He turned to Ariella. “Now you’re resorting to this.”

She shrugged. “If that gets me what I want.”

He shook his head. “I can’t tell you. He’ll kill me.”

Ariella rose to her feet. “And I’ll kill you now If you don't answer the question. What do you prefer?”
