Ariella’s magic snapped from around the creature’s thick neck.

“Do you want to see Prince Paimon?” the demon asked, his voice otherworldly. “I shall grant your wish.”

I moved my feet wide and Ariella brought both her hands up, covered in light. We were ready for a fight. Suddenly, the two doors in the reception area burst open and a throng of demons surrounded us.

All right. This had been a little irresponsible. We should have thought this out. Nevertheless, I wouldn’t go down without a fight.

I began changing, but I never finished.

The old-lady demon appeared by my side and punched me square in the chest. Pain flaredeverywhereas I flew to the wall.

I groaned as another round of pain took over me.

I slid to the ground, and then darkness surrounded me.

* * *

A jolt ranthrough my face and I startled awake. Panic rose in my lungs as I realized I was tied to a chair and I was … I looked around, puzzled. In a house?

I groaned as a full bout of pain radiated through my body—my face, my back, my chest. Ariella and I had gone into Paimon’s office, and we were attacked by a demon army. The old-lady demon threw me at the wall and I blacked out.

And now here I was.

I looked around—I was tied to a dining chair in the middle of a large living room. The place looked expensive with modern furniture, smooth hardwood floors, full glass walls, metal decorations, and chandeliers. I had to say, the modern fireplace that cut through the wall in a simple, long rectangle with the fire running along it in a single line was a nice touch.

I frowned. Wasn’t Ariella with me? Where was she now?

I wasn’t alone, though. There were at least ten demons standing in the room’s corners and openings, and probably more behind me, where I couldn’t see them.

From the corner of my eyes, I saw two demons talking, then one left the room.

A moment later, I heard footsteps approaching and stiffened.

This couldn’t be good.

My heart seized when the man who had been in front of Raika, who had pierced her heart with a shadow sword, now stood not five feet from me.

Paimon.

“Ah, I see you’re awake.” The demon smiled at me. I jerked in the chair, but the ropes tightened and dug into my skin. Paimon tsked. “Enchanted ropes. The more you move, the more they tighten.”

I exhaled heavily. It took all of my restraint to stop moving, but I did. “I will kill you,” I said through gritted teeth.

“You have no idea how many times I've heard that throughout the centuries. How about you, Rotgar?”

One of the demons who had been talking before approached. So this was Rotgar—he looked like a regular human with unimpressive features and a nice black suit.

One corner of Rotgar’s mouth tilted up. “Too many too count.”

“Same.“ Paimon opened his arms wide. “And yet, here I am.”

I stared at him, wanting nothing more than to jump over him, to punch that smug smile off his pretty face. He seemed sophisticated and rich in his suit, but I knew the truth. This demon was evil, pure and simple. He was the worst of the worst, and for that, he had to die.

“You killed my mate.” The words I didn’t plan on saying tumbled out of my lips.

I hadn’t been there when Paimon appeared in the main square with Nortrix. My friends told me about his short monologue. The demon revealed being Raika’s father, and he was there to take the crystals because he needed their magic, and to take Raika too. He wanted her by his side, for whatever reason.

Paimon nodded. “Yes, you’re Shane, right? Nightshade alpha and my daughter’s mate.”
